Andrea Bargnani signs two-year deal with Saski Baskonia in Liga ACB
The former No. 1 draft pick joins one of the better teams in the world's second best league.
For now, the NBA career of former 2006 No. 1 overall pick Andrea Bargnani seems to be over. After a decade in the NBA and a big downturn over the last couple of years, Bargnani has agreed to a two-year deal with Staski Baskonia in the second best league in the world -- Liga ACB. Baskonia, otherwise known as Laboral Kutxa, was fourth in the 2015-16 season in the ACB and lost in the semi-finals to Barcelona. They recently lost perimeter big man Davis Bertans, who signed with the San Antonio Spurs.
Bargnani's career was both overly scrutinized and disappointing. As a top pick in the draft by the Toronto Raptors, Bargnani was expected to be a franchise player. He was a solid player for a long time, but never good enough to truly garner All-NBA or even All-Star status. His greatest scoring season came in 2010-11 when he dropped 21.4 points per game in 66 games. It was the only time he cracked the 20 points per game barrier in his career, but he did follow that season up with a 19.5 points per game campaign following the lockout.
However, Bargnani wasn't a great shooter in the second half of his career (29.8 percent) and he seemed to have a steep decline when teams decided he shouldn't be getting a lot of shots. He was a poor rebounder and an awful defender most of the time. The New York Knicks traded a first-round pick for him before the 2013-14 season. He was a decent scorer for them but a bad overall player. He spent his final season with the Brooklyn Nets but only played 634 minutes in 46 games.
He finishes with career averages of 14.3 points and 4.6 rebounds in 28.7 minutes. He could always come back to the NBA but he'll be about to turn 33 years old following this two-year deal in Spain.
