Carmelo Anthony: Knicks will 'absolutely' make the playoffs
Knicks star says "for sure," the Knicks will be back in the postseason, and he "can't wait to get started."
“Yeah, I think so for sure. Absolutely,” an impressively slimmed-down Anthony said of the Knicks’ playoff chances before entering the Jordan Gym Terminal 23 on W. 32nd Street for a late morning-to-early afternoon workout with a group of NBA players.
Anthony snuffed an attempt to establish any goals for the revamped Knicks, who will enter their first full season under team president Phil Jackson and new coach Derek Fisher.
“I can’t wait to get started,” said Anthony, who missed the playoffs for the first time in his career when the Knicks stumbled to a 37-45 record last season. “No goals. Not setting any goals, but I just can’t wait to get it back on.”
If you ask DeMarcus Cousins if the Kings will make the playoffs next season, he'll say "absolutely." If you ask Michael Carter-William if the Philadelphia Eyebleeds will make the playoffs next year, he'll say "absolutely."
People really don't get how wired to competitiveness these guys are. They get beaten down, which is why by March so many of them check out. But in August? Everyone can convince themselves they can be that team that surprises people. And what if Anthony said "Nope, I've already made plans to rent an island in May because I won't have (expletive) else to do." Do you know how massively destroyed he would get for that, not only by fans and media, but teammates and team personnel?
Hope springs eternal in the NBA.
As for whether the Knicks actually can make the postseason with Jason Smith as their likely opening-night starting center and Andrea Bargnani as arguably their fourth-best player? There's always a chance things come together. Phil Jackson has a magical power over guys and if he can transfer some of it to Derek Fisher, this could happen.
But absolutely? Little skeptical of that.
