Cavs exercise options on Irving, Waiters, Zeller and Thompson

The Cavaliers are building through youth, and in order to do that, you have to keep them while they grow.

The team announced Wednesday they've exercised options on Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters, Tyler Zeller and Tristan Thompson

For Irving and Thompson, they had their fourth-year options exercised, while Waiters and Zeller had their third-year options picked up.

Picking up options in the NBA for even passable players on rookie scale deals is a no-brainer, so you can imagine what picking up Irving's is.

Irving, who was the first overall pick in 2011, has career averages of 20.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists. Thompson, taken fourth overall by the Cavs in 2011, started to blossom some last season, and has averaged 10.2 points and 8.2 rebounds in his three seasons.

Waiters was selected fourth in 2012 and after an up-and-down rookie season, finished averaging 14.7 points on 41.2 percent shooting. Zeller, taken 17th by the Mavs in 2012 and acquired by the Cavs, averaged 7.9 points and 5.7 rebounds last season.
