Deron Williams to have surgery on both ankles
Nets point guard will have bone spurs removed from right ankle, arthroscopic surgery on left.
Depressing news for Nets fans Thursday as the team announced that point guard Deron Williams, who has struggled through ankle injuries the past three seasons, will undergo surgery on both ankles next week.
Brooklyn Nets guard Deron Williams is scheduled to undergo surgery on both ankles on Tuesday, May 27, General Manager Billy King announced today. The surgery will be performed by Nets’ foot and ankle specialist, Dr. Martin O’Malley.
“Deron will undergo surgery on both ankles next Tuesday,” said Dr. O’Malley. “He will have a bone chip removed from his right ankle, and the left ankle will have an arthroscopic cleanout with removal of spurs from both the front and back of the ankle. Deron is expected to make a full recovery.”
Williams appeared in 64 games this season, averaging 14.3 points, 6.1 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.45 steals, missing 16 games due to ankle injuries.
The Brooklyn Game has a comprehensive history of Williams' injury, which will make you wince about nine times.
Williams disappointed in large part this year, failing to be the leader in production or leadership for a team in need of both. The Nets found themselves relying on Joe Johnson and Paul Pierce to a large degree in the playoffs, and after signing Williams to massive deal in 2012, there has been speculation that the Nets could look to move Williams. This injury issue both complicates those efforts and creates more of an urgency to resolving whether Williams is resoundingly the future of the franchise.
