Eye on Basketball Podcast: Two podcasts, one post
Zach Harper talks to Royce Young and Ethan Sherwood Strauss about LeBron James' 61-point effort, the LeBron-Durant MVP race, and the Sloan analytics conference.
We have two podcast episodes in one post today. The first episode, I'm joined by Royce Young of CBSSports.com to talk about LeBron James' big 61-point night against the Charlotte Bobcats. Did it justifiably overshadow Al Jefferson's amazing game? Was it the best game his jumper has ever had? Was he better in the NBA Finals or the 2012 Eastern Conference finals? Does this hold up historically for the attention it's getting?
Then we get into the debate over the 2013-14 MVP race. Kevin Durant was ruling the land for the past two months after LeBron James was the best player in the league the first two months of the season. Does James have an advantage over Durant right now? Does Durant still have the edge over James? Is it going to come down to which player has the last signature moment of the season?
We discuss all of this, plus tanking, Steve Nash's wanting to play next season, and much more.
For the second episdoe, I'm joined by Ethan Sherwood Strauss to discuss the LeBron James performance juxtaposed to the history of Kobe Bryant. Why are the Kobe fans so dismissive of the performance LeBron just gave us? Is there a reason fans have a hard time accepting both players at the same time? Is there a better way to characterize someone than "Stan" when describing a fan?
Ethan was at the Sloan analytics conference in Boston this past weekend. Where is the analytics movement headed? Is it still about finding the best stats to analyze the sports we love or has it become entertainment in humanizing the decision-makers of the leagues we cover? Is it a good thing we haven't found that one all-encompassing statistic because it would really take the fun and mystique out of basketball debates?
We discuss all of this, plus being sick, loving Kobe Bryant, and much more.
