Grizzlies hire's John Hollinger to front office position

From the peanut gallery to the real deal.'s John Hollinger has been hired to a front office position by the Memphis Grizzlies, according to

Hollinger was recruited to the Grizzlies by new controlling owner Robert Pera and CEO/managing partner Jason Levien, who have made upgrading Memphis' analytics department one of their front-office priorities.

Hollinger, known for his Player Efficiency Rating (PER), will begin next week as a senior executive.

"It's incredibly difficult to leave ESPN, but the chance to work for an NBA team and the Grizzlies' new ownership was an irresistible opportunity," Hollinger told Thursday.

There's probably been no more influential basketball writer on the planet than Hollinger the past few years. He has been at the forefront of reinventing the way we all evaluate and digest basketball and basketball statistics.

Hollinger, 41, started out with a website called "Alleyoop" in 1996 using advanced basketball stats. He worked for The Oregonian's website, served as an editor at and then moved to in 2005.
