Jason Kidd to agree to plea deal for DWI charge; suspension coming?
The new Nets coach will agree to a plea deal for his 2012 DWI arrest.
"He will say that the drinks he had that night rendered him intoxicated," his attorney, Edward Burke Jr., was saying on Monday morning. "What Jason is going to do is stand up and own this."
About time. Burke comes out of Sag Harbor and has handled a lot of high-profile cases in his time on the South Fork of eastern Long Island, explained that as part of the plea arrangement with the office of the Suffolk County District Attorney, Kidd has agreed to make school appearances on Long Island in the fall, which will be taped and can be used later as public-service announcements if the DA’s office chooses to use them that way.
With Kidd's admission of guilt in the incident, the league will likely suspend him a couple of games, as is its history with DWI situations. Other similar situations have rendered a two-game suspension. Former Kings coach Eric Musselman in 2007, Jason Richardson in 2009 and Dorell Wright in 2010 all were hit with two-game suspensions after DWI incidents.
So it's likely Kidd won't make his debut on the Nets' bench until the team's third game of the season.
Initially, Kidd pleaded "not guilty" to the misdemeanor DWI charge.
Before being hired by the Nets, Kidd said the team was very aware of the situation and that the arrest was thoroughly vetted by team officials, including GM Billy King.
"Billy and them did all their homework," Kidd told the Daily News. "Believe me."
