Lakers to sign guard Nick Young
The Lakers are signing guard Nick Young, his agent tells CBSSports.com's Ken Berger.
Don't worry, Laker fans. Help is on the way.
(Note: I'm not being serious with that.)
Nick Young has agreed to a deal with the Lakers, agent Mark Bartelstein says.— Ken Berger (@KBergCBS) July 11, 2013
The deal is for one year at the league minmum, which, really, is kind of an excellent deal for the Lakers. It gives them much, much needed depth and pays Young exactly what he's probably worth.
Young, 28, played for the 76ers last season, averaging 10.6 points in 59 games. He's a high-volume gunner who tends to take bad shots, but he can also make a good number of them. I'm still talking about Young, not his new teammate, Kobe Bryant.
The Lakers are obviously trying to move on from the Dwight Howard debacle. And while they aren't likely to field a contender, general manager Mitch Kupchak has done a solid job rebounding. He's putting together a somewhat capable roster -- assuming Kobe comes back mostly the same from his injury -- and is still maintaining future financial flexibility.
With Bryant coming off the Achilles injury, Young might have an increased role early on. The Lakers also just added Jordan Farmar, so they're restocking a little backcourt depth, which they desperately need.
