LeBron James on Kevin Durant winning MVP: 'He deserves it'
Miami Heat star and four-time NBA MVP LeBron James says Oklahoma City Star Kevin Durant deserves MVP.
It's been reported that Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant will be named Most Valuable Player for the 2013-14 season some time this week. It's his first MVP award after entering the NBA in 2007 as the second pick in the draft. He beats out four-time MVP winner LeBron James of the Miami Heat for the award after an incredible season of historic scoring and play. James isn't fighting Durant winning the award either.
LeBron told the media Monday he thought Durant had an MVP season and that he "deserves" the award for his play this season. From The Associated Press:
It's expected that the Thunder star will be announced as winner this week. James has lauded Durant's play this season several times recently and did so again Monday.
"Much respect to him and he deserves it," James said. "He had a big-time MVP season."
Durant's season was truly spectacular. He averaged 32.0 points (league leader), 7.4 rebounds, and 5.5 assists. He was just the fourth player in NBA history to average 32-7-5 in a season. He also scored with remarkable efficiency, making 50.3 percent of his shots, 39.1 percent of his 3-pointers, and 87.3 percent of his free throw attempts. He helped lead the Thunder to a 59-23 record, even though Russell Westbrook missed 36 games due to knee surgeries.
Coming off of two straight MVP awards, James gave Durant his biggest competition for the award. He averaged 27.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 6.3 assists while shooting 56.7 percent from the field, 37.9 percent from downtown, and 75.0 percent from the charity stripe. He helped lead the Heat to a 54-28 record, even with Dwyane Wade missing 28 games during the season.
