Life after Larry: Pacers looking at Hornets executive Chad Buchanan for GM position

Larry Bird shocked everybody when he announced he was stepping down as President of Basketball Operations for the Pacers. However, Indiana moved quickly after the move promoting General Manager Kevin Pritchard to the President of Basketball Operations position. It appears the Pacers are going to try and find a new General Manager to work under Pritchard.

This would allow the Pacers to keep the status quo in their front office that was established when Pritchard worked under Bird. One of the Pacers' early targets for their GM position is the Hornets' Chad Buchanan. Currently Buchanan is an Assistant General Manager and works under Rich Cho.

Buchanan has only been with the Hornets for two seasons, but he's a long-time veteran in the NBA as he previously spent 10 years with the Trail Blazers, including a brief period as their interim GM. Buchanan is well respected across the league and his experience in college scouting is something the Pacers would find great value in.

The Hornets, long removed from the days of the Bobcats, have become one of the more stable front offices in the NBA the last few years. Charlotte and Portland might not be the most common places to pick out future General Managers and Vice Presidents, but Buchanan is more than ready for a major position somewhere in the NBA.
