Phil Jackson says CAA's Knicks ties carry no weight with him
Knicks new president of basketbal operations speaks to the media and covers his plans not to coach, how the triangle can help.
The Knicks' new Zenmaster In Charge Phil Jackson spoke with reporters Thursday morning and sent a message. There's a new sherriff in town.
For years, the Knicks have been known as the New York Knicks Brought To You By CAA. Creative Artists Agency is the largest and most powerful representation entity in the world, and its clients cross sports and entertainment boundaries from New York to Hollywood. Carmelo Anthony is a CAA client, as are many of the other Knicks. Mike Woodson left his agent this summer and joined... CAA. Many members of the front office in place before Jackson turned up? They're CAA clients or have CAA ties.
Jackson says those ties are no longer relevant to the future of the organization.
Phil, on the team's CAA ties: "Those won't hold weight with me."— Chris Herring (@HerringWSJ) April 3, 2014
Asked Jackson specifically abt the CAA question. Said he had an agreement w Dolan that he'd be able to squash agency ties if necessary.— Chris Herring (@HerringWSJ) April 3, 2014
That's pretty phenomenal to hear if you're a Knicks fan. At times it's seemed like the goal of the team was to put their star client, Anthony, in the best possible position over the needs of the team. It's also just a bad way to go about business, with secret cabals in charge of decision making. That also looks to end under Jackson.
Meanwhile, Jackson also put to bed any ideas anyone might have about him taking over if Mike Woodson isn't retained as coach this summer.
Phil: "I have no intention of coaching."— Chris Herring (@HerringWSJ) April 3, 2014
He also mentioned how the team's defensive issues would be alleviated by using the Triangle on offense and that the team could be dangerous in the playoffs. Changes are clearly coming to the Knicks, no matter how this season ends.
