Ray Allen says Houston made 'enticing offer' in 2014 after leaving Heat
According to Ray Allen, he almost signed with the Rockets in 2014
Since 2014, Ray Allen has flirted with the idea of making an NBA comeback. Allen had plenty of offers too as it seemed like every single championship contending team showed interest in signing the veteran sharp shooter. But after two years of these endless flirtations, Allen decided that he was enjoying his time away from the game so he officially retired, ending any further speculation that he was going to make a comeback.
Allen though apparently was interested in joining the Houston Rockets immediately after leaving the Heat in 2014. Mainly because according to Allen, the Rockets presented him with an enticing offer.
From Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today:
What was the right situation for Allen? He explained it was a combination of factors: offer, playing time, ability to help a team compete for a championship, playing for a coach who didn't wear players out through grinding practices and family considerations.
Houston made an enticing offer in 2014, Allen said. But the deal - the full mid-level exception according to a person familiar with the situation -- wasn't enough to lure him into another season.
That 2014 Rockets team had an MVP candidate in James Harden and made it to the Western Conference Finals before losing to the eventual champs in the Golden State Warriors. Having a shooter like Allen would've definitely benefited the Rockets as Harden thrives when being surrounded by shooters. But of course since this is all hypothetical, it is hard to say how much better the Rockets would've been if Allen had signed in Houston.
This is just another one of those what could've happened situations that Allen has created over the last couple of years with his many rumored comebacks. Which now that he has retired, will never occur ever again.
