Report: Celtics still awaiting word from Doc Rivers, Kevin Garnett
As the Boston Celtics start preparing for the offseason, they reportedly are still waiting to find out if Doc Rivers and Kevin Garnett will return.
The Boston Celtics are in a weird transition phase right now and aren't quite sure what their team will look like next season. They have a veteran core of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce looking closer to retiring than contending. They have no idea how quickly Rajon Rondo will be back from his ACL tear that happened in January. And this team might be rebuilding instead of retooling pretty soon.
The reason they aren't quite sure what kind of team they might have next season is because they're reportedly still awaiting word on whether or not Kevin Garnett and coach Doc Rivers will return to the Celtics for the 2013-14 season. Both guys could retire from basketball, which would dramatically change this franchise immediately. From the Boston Herald:
After auditioning a number of players at the team’s facility in Waltham, Danny Ainge took to the road this week in an effort to gather information in advance of the June 27 draft.
Meanwhile, there has still been no final decision on next season communicated from either Doc Rivers, who continues to work with the team on next year’s roster, or Kevin Garnett, who, it is hoped, is out in California removing the weary from his body and mind. Nor have the Celts made a final call on Paul Pierce, who, if he is not traded beforehand, must, in 23 days, either be bought out for $5 million or kept and guaranteed $15.3 million.
After Rondo went down, Garnett was the team's best and most important player last season. Not knowing if his defense and leadership will be around is a big question mark for how this team could look heading into next year. Without Rivers possibly coaching the team they put out there, that would make it even harder to imagine how the roster would look minus one of the top coaches in the league teaching them and devising a game plan for them to follow every night.
There have also been questions about whether or not the Celtics would buy Paul Pierce out of the final year of his contract. Doing so would save them about $10 million, but you'd have to wonder if they'd only do that if Garnett and Rivers went their separate ways first. Regardless, the title contending teams of the Boston Celtics franchise seem to be behind them, and they'll now have to work on the next era as they build this roster back up.
