Report: Frank Vogel, Adrian Griffin two top candidates for Magic job
Former Pacers coach would be a perfect fit in Orlando
The Orlando Magic interviewed former Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel on Monday for their vacant head-coaching position, according to The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski. They also reportedly interviewed Magic assistant coach Adrian Griffin on Tuesday. Vogel and Griffin are their "two top targets," per The Vertical.
Vogel reportedly has "serious interest" in the job. He has also met with the Memphis Grizzlies and New York Knicks, and the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan Feigen reported that he is in the mix for the Houston Rockets, too. Vogel is a logical fit in Orlando, as he helped the Pacers mature into one of the best defensive teams in recent history and got them to the conference finals two years in a row. The Magic hired Scott Skiles last year to help their young core grow into a playoff team, but he quit last week. Vogel seems extremely qualified for that task.
CBS Sports' Ken Berger reported on Monday that promoting Griffin is "very much on the table," as it would give the players some consistency. The Vertical reported that Griffin "is a popular choice among many of the Magic players." In the past two seasons, Orlando has had three coaches -- Jacque Vaughn, James Borrego and Skiles. You can understand why players might prefer a familiar face to stick around.
Skiles' departure came out of nowhere, but that doesn't mean Orlando will take a long time to replace him.
"I do think time is of the essence for us, and we want to make sure that we move swiftly," Magic general manager told the Orlando Sentinel's Josh Robbins on Tuesday. "At the same time, we want to make sure that we're well-rooted in our research, and we don't want to make a rushed decision. So there's a juxtaposition there that we have to try to balance, but certainly there's probably more urgency now than there would be if there weren't other openings available."
That is particularly true when it comes to Vogel, who would fit just as nicely in Memphis as he would in Orlando. If the Magic decide they want him, they should act quickly.
