Report: Grizzlies to let Ed Davis become unrestricted free agent
Memphis forward Ed David will reportedly not receive a qualifying offer, and will hit unrestricted free agency at midnight.
Memphis Grizzlies power forward Ed Davis will become an unrestricted free agent at midnight, as the team will not issue him a $4.4 million qualifying offer, according to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski.
Davis never quite found his place in his season-and-a-half in Memphis, stuck in a bench role behind Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. When he arrived in a trade from the Toronto Raptors at the end of January in 2013, he struggled just to get on the floor with Darrell Arthur as a backup, and the same was true after Kosta Koufos arrived the following summer. When the Grizzlies acquired Tennessee big man Jarnell Stokes during last Thursday's draft, the writing was on the wall.
He could be a massive steal for another team in free agency, though. It wasn't that long ago that Davis looked like a solid starter for Toronto, and if he'd never been moved he'd likely be looking at much more lucrative offers. He's not a huge name, but the 25-year-old can help immediately on the cheap with inside scoring, rebounding and pick-and-roll defense.
Davis himself has no problem with Memphis, but is more than motivated, via Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal:
