Report: Hornets to change name to New Orleans Pelicans in 2013-2014

Yahoo! Sports reports that the Hornets are going to the birds. The franchise, which was the Charlotte Hornets, which replaced the New Orleans Jazz, which became the Utah Jazz despite there being no music and no dancing in Utah, will be renamed next season:

The New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their nickname to the Pelicans as early as the 2013-14 season, numerous sources told Yahoo! Sports.

The Hornets planned to change their nickname since Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, purchased the team on April 14. Benson also owns the rights to the nickname Pelicans.

The Hornets also considered the nicknames Krewe (groups of costumed paraders in the annual Mardi Gras carnival in New Orleans) and Brass.

Well, there's that.

It's a pretty awful name, to be honest. Granted, the Los Angeles Lakers don't actually have any major lakes nearby, and it's not like your standard NBA player is wanting to connect with his Celtics (as in the ethno-linguistic group) heritage. But really, if you're a free agent, what person is saying to themselves "I want to be a Pelican!" Pelicans aren't cool. They're slightly creepy and scary with the gigantic beak thing.

But really, they're just birds. And not even hawks, or eagles. I guess they're technically birds of prey, but no one's like "Oh, man, watch out, that pelican looks scary."

What's worse, the name is likely going to be shortened to Pels. "Tonight, the Pels face the Cats in a battle of whose marketing team can be anchored with the most horrible nickname!"

Speaking of the Bobcats, consider it a pretty good shot that they revert back to the Charlotte Hornets with this move.

I maintain the best option is for New Orleans to become the Jazz again, Utah to become the Grizzlies, the Grizzlies to become the Hornets, but no one asked me.

The Pelicans were an old New Orleans baseball team. You can check the logo below. Also, the state bird is the pelican, so they've got that going for them.
