Report: Mo Williams won't re-sign with Jazz unless he's the starter

The Jazz traded for Michigan star point guard Trey Burke in Thursday's draft, and the idea is clearly to make the explosive guard the future of the franchise's backcourt. Mo Williams will re-sign as a free agent with the Utah Jazz only if he remains the starting point guard next season, a source told Yahoo! Sports on Friday.

"He's not going to come back as a backup," the source said of Williams.

Somehow, I doubt the Jazz are going to have a hard time with this. Or at least they shouldn't. It's the Jazz, after all.

Williams is a fine veteran starter, but the Jazz are looking at a serious rebuilding effort, going young and looking to the future. It would be great to have a veteran point guard to teach Burke the ropes and provide a transition, but you can't make promises just to keep Mo Williams. You just don't do that. Mo Williams is not a guy you promise a starting spot to, no matter how many daggers he hit

Williams missed several months last season with a thumb injury, and averaged 13 points and 6 assists in 46 games or Utah.
