Report: Rockets interview David Blatt, plan to meet with Kenny Smith Tuesday

You can scratch new Sacramento Kings coach Dave Joerger off the Houston Rockets' list. However, their search for a head coach continued when owner Leslie Alexander and general manager Daryl Morey met with former Cleveland Cavaliers coach David Blatt, according to the Houston Chronicle's Jonathan Feigen. The Rockets will reportedly meet with TNT analyst Kenny Smith and former Suns coach Jeff Hornacek on Tuesday.

According to ESPN's Calvin Watkins, Houston has not discussed any of this with star guard James Harden, but that is because it is in the early stages of the process. Harden is expected to be in the loop before a decision is made.

Much like the Kings before Joerger became available, the Rockets are casting a wide net here. In addition to J.B. Bickerstaff, who was their interim coach this season and removed himself from consideration, they have reportedly interviewed Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Mike D'Antoni, Houston assistant coach Chris Finch and Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Sam Cassell, per ESPN. The Rockets also reportedly have an interview scheduled with Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Stephen Silas.

The Houston Chronicle reported that they have talked to former Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel's representatives, and while they have nothing scheduled with ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy, "they know where he is." Van Gundy and Scott Brooks, who accepted the Washington Wizards job a couple of weeks ago, were reportedly the "co-favorites" in Houston when it started interviewing candidates.

At this point, it's hard to know what the Rockets are looking for. Based on how this season went, you'd think they'd want a proven coach who can rebuild their defense and manage a locker room. D'Antoni isn't exactly known for defense, though, and Smith has no track record at all. Vogel has little in common with Blatt. There is no theme here.
