Report: Spurs are persistent in pursuing Pau Gasol in free agency
The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly getting closer to becoming the team for Pau Gasol in free agency as they battle the Chicago Bulls.
Pau Gasol may be one of the more underrated free agents in this 2014 class. As teams push each other to jockey for position on LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, guys like Gasol can be added to a contender for relatively cheap and transform their attack. Making him a third or fourth guy in the offense could save the pounding his body has had to endure over the years, and with him taking a significant pay cut from last year's salary, he could be an incredible barganin. It's why the Chicago Bulls and the San Antonio Spurs are so persistent in their pursuit of him.
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports is reporting the Spurs' persistence on the matter is helping them become real contenders for Gasol's services as he decides where to spend the next season or two of his career. They're "inching closer" to the Bulls, who could be the favorites to sign the 13-year veteran.

Gasol played in 60 games for the Los Angeles Lakers last year, making just over $19 million in the final season of a six-year, $86 million contract. He averaged 17.4 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 3.4 assists for the Lakers, as they endured the worst season in the Los Angeles era for the franchise. If he were to join the Spurs, he could supplant Tiago Splitter in the starting lineup or come off the bench with Boris Diaw as super sub big men. For the Bulls, he'd likely replace Carlos Boozer in the starting lineup.
