Stephen Curry makes history with consecutive seasons of 250 3s
Golden State Warriors' star Stephen Curry has first back-to-back seasons in NBA history with at least 250 made 3-pointers.
Last season, Stephen Curry did something we had never seen before. He hit 272 3-pointers in a single season, breaking Ray Allen's previous record of 269. He accomplished that by making a ridiculous 45.3 percent from downtown to set the record with the utmost efficiency.
While he didn't quite scorch the nets in the same way we saw last season, Curry once again made history with his outside shooting. With 24 seconds left in the second quarter of an overtime loss to the Portland Trail Blazers, the Golden State Warriors' star knocked down a 3-pointer off of a Harrison Barnes pass to become the first player in NBA history to hit at least 250 3-pointers in consecutive seasons.
Only four players have made 250 3-pointers in a season. George McCloud and Dennis Scott did it in the 1995-96 season, and then Allen's record 269 makes happened as a member of the Seattle SuperSonics in 2005-06. McCloud and Scott's 3-point marks have a slight asterisk next to their totals in the record books because it happened during the three-year stretch in which the NBA attempted to boost scoring by moving the line in to an even 22 feet around the entire arc.
Curry hasn't been as prolific this season as he was last season, but he's still managed to shoot 42.1 percent from beyond the 3-point line. His current total of 254 3-pointers has come on 602 attempts from beyond the arc. His 602 attempts are the 10th most in a season, beating out his 600 attempts during his record-breaking season in 2012-13. If Curry plays in the final two games and holds to his average of 7.7 attempts, he'll finish with 617 attempts on the season, which would move him to the seventh highest total attempted in a season in NBA history.
McCloud's 1995-96 season holds the attempts record with a ridiculous 678 attempted.
Curry made 7-of-14 in the loss to the Blazers, but if he has two more games similar that, he could threaten to tie or break Allen's record once again. He's made eight 3-pointers or more in a game six times in his career with three of those happening this season.
He's also the owner of the most 3-pointers made through the first five years of a career and it's not even close. Curry's seven made 3-pointers Sunday night put him at 898 through his first five seasons (with two games to go). The next closest in the first five years of a career are Ben Gordon at 770 and Nick Van Exel at 750. Allen's total through the first five seasons of his career was 699 and he's the current all-time leader 2,969.
If Curry is able to keep up his current pace, especially considering the increased volume we've seen the last two years, he would pass Allen's likely final career total within a decade.
