Trey Burke hearing draft position between two and six
The Michigan point guard rocketed up a lot of draft boards after a strong showing in the NCAA tournament and says he's hearing he'll go between two and six.
Michigan point guard Trey Burke has steadily gained steam on draft boards with his impressive NCAA tournament performance and workouts. So much so that he's hearing he'll be a top-six pick. Via the Detroit Free Press:
“I’m hearing anywhere from two to six,” he said Wednesday on the “Huge Show” syndicated across Michigan, identifying the two teams – Orlando and New Orleans – needing a point guard. “That’s pretty much everything I’m hearing now. It’s really a toss up and up in the air. So I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the next month or so.”
Of those five teams, one is definitely in need of a point guard (Orlando) with the Pelicans likely needing one as well. The Wizards are set with John Wall, the Bobcats seem set with Kemba Walker and the Suns just picked a point guard in last year's draft.
In Jeff Goodman's mock draft, he has Burke going sixth to the Pelicans, with Matt Moore having the same. The Pelicans have Greivis Vasquez, who was one of the league's breakout players last season, but they're looking for a long-term point fix to replace Chris Paul, and Burke could be the answer.
So, really, top six seems about right. If he slips past the Pelicans, he could see a bit of a drop. The Kings (No. 7) could possibly use a point guard but, really, they could use pretty much everything. The Pistons (No. 8) have a bit of a stocked backcourt, the Timberwolves (No. 9) have Ricky Rubio, the Trail Blazers (No. 10) have Damian Lillard, the 76ers (No. 11) have Jrue Holiday and the Thunder (No. 12) have Russell Westbrook. The Mavericks at No. 13 could use a point guard, so if Burke were to slip and assuming the Mavs don't deal the pick, unlikely he slips past there. Same with the Jazz picking 14th.
But Burke should feel good about the top six. New Orleans kind of seems like a perfect fit for him.
