Blake Griffin continues to take a beating.
The Los Angeles Clippers All-Star forward absorbed another major blow on Thursday night, taking a flagrant foul to the head from Phoenix Suns center Robin Lopez.
With a little more than six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Clippers pushed forward on a 2-on-1 fast break off of a turnover. Griffin received a pass at the free throw line extended, using a gather dribble before he exploded towards the rim. Lopez, the only Phoenix defender back, swung down on Griffin's head and neck as he entered the restricted circle, following through hard enough to cause Griffin to stumble backwards as he fell. Griffin crashed to the court and held his head as Lopez spilled to the court.
Lopez was assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 on the play and was immediately ejected.
SBNation Arizona got reaction from both Griffin and Lopez.
"It's not the first time," Griffin said. "I haven't seen it. It's tough to tell what goes down. It's part of the game. I don't think it's malicious or trying to hurt anybody but after a while it gets pretty frustrating only you've got to keep playing, you can't complain.
"There is a line, there is definitely a line. When it gets crossed -- you know you can push all the way up to the line, the line is pretty fine but once you cross it gets pretty dangerous."
Lopez defended his action as a fair play.
"I was just going for the ball," he said. "He got by my and I was just trying to go for the ball then he got a bit farther (and I) tried to go for his arms... It was what it was. It's my job to protect the rim and I tried to go for the ball then I tried to go for his arms."
The Suns held on for the 93-90 win. Griffin finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds on 7-for-17 shooting in 37 minutes in the loss.
Back in March, Griffin took a Flagrant Foul 2 from New Orleans Hornets forward Jason Smith, a foul which later drew a 2-game suspension from the league office.
