Video: Lakers' Dwight Howard knocks down the second 3-pointer of his career
Dwight Howard makes the second 3-pointer of his career and helps the Lakers tie a franchise record in the process.
Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for Andrew Bynum, the Los Angeles Lakers tied a franchise record for 3-pointers made in a regulation game on Friday night in their 122-103 victory over the Denver Nuggets. What's so bad about that for Bynum? It was the Dwight Howard 3-pointer shown above that tied the mark.
Bynum famously had a spat with former Lakers coach Mike Brown last season when he stepped into a 3 with 16 seconds left on the shot clock like it was something to do. With Mike D'Antoni now running the show and urging confidence in his players taking good, open shots, it seems like Bynum's gunner mentality just missed out on becoming fully operational.
It was Howard's second career made 3-pointer, the first coming on Jan. 5, 2007, against the Charlotte Bobcats.
The Lakers' 17 made 3-pointers were their most since Jan. 7, 2003, when Kobe Bryant tied the NBA record with 12 made 3s in one game. Friday night's deluge was definitely more of a team effort. Antawn Jamison continued his improved play under D'Antoni by knocking down five of his 10 attempts from downtown. And Jodie Meeks made seven of his eight attempts from 3-point range.
Oddly enough, Bryant was the only Laker to attempt a 3-point shot against Denver and not make one. Six different players on Los Angeles made a 3, which is exactly what D'Antoni likes to see.
As Matt Moore noted on Friday night, D'Antoni's teams just end up having these kinds of nights more often than most teams.
Howard had missed his previous 28 attempts from long range -- a shot selection spanning six seasons. He moves ahead of Bynum on the all-time 3-pointers made list. Bynum's only 3-point connection of his career came last season. He's 1 of 9 (11.1 percent), nearly doubling Dwight's career accuracy of 5.9 percent (2-of-34).
