DeMarcus Cousins: Aiming for 2020-21 return
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins (knee) will sit out the resumed NBA season to focus on rehabbing his torn left ACL, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

Cousins is reportedly drawing interest from several teams, but the big man will continue to work out on his own with the goal of returning at 100 percent to begin the 2020-21 season. The Kentucky product's career has been derailed by injuries in recent years, as he's played just 78 regular-season games since the start of the 2017-18 campaign.

Lakers' DeMarcus Cousins: Waived by Lakers
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins (knee) was waived by the Lakers on Friday to create a roster spot for Markieff Morris, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.

Earlier this week, coach Frank Vogel noted that it would be possible for Cousins to return in time for the playoffs. Ultimately, the organization decided it would be better to shore up its depth and increase its talent floor by adding the healthy Morris. Cousins will continue rehabbing his torn ACL, presumably with hopes of returning to the NBA for the 2020-21 season. He's played just 78 regular-season games since the beginning of the 2017-18 campaign.

Lakers' DeMarcus Cousins: Could be back for playoffs
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Lakers coach Frank Vogel said Saturday during his media availability session at All-Star weekend that Cousins (knee) could be ready to play at some point during the postseason. "He's on track to get healthy by the playoffs," Vogel said of Cousins, who underwent surgery in August to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. "We'll have to see where he's at with rhythm and conditioning and timing and all that stuff. But there is a possibility he returns this season, yes."

After inking Cousins to a one-year deal in July, the Lakers envisioned him forming a dynamic tandem in the frontcourt with Anthony Davis, but those hopes were dashed when the 29-year-old was injured in an offseason workout. Given that a torn ACL typically carries a 10-to-12-month recovery timeline, Vogel's comments about Cousins' potential return are surprising, especially with the big man having already dealt with a ruptured Achilles' tendon and a torn quadriceps muscle in the past two years. With all that in mind, it would be surprising if Cousins returned at any point in 2019-20, as he'll likely be eager to preserve his health in anticipation of hitting free agency again next summer.

Lakers' DeMarcus Cousins: Criminal charges dropped
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins (knee) was cleared Friday of charges related to a warrant for his arrest filed in Mobile, Ala. in August, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.

Cousins was facing third-degree harassment charges after allegedly making violent threats toward an ex-girlfriend. Though his legal situation is now resolved, Cousins could still face a fine or suspension from the NBA while the league conducts its own investigation in the matter. The 29-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Lakers in July but is expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2019-20 season while rehabbing a torn ACL suffered during a workout earlier in the summer.

Lakers' DeMarcus Cousins: Lakers apply for exception
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Lakers have applied for a $1.75 million disabled player exception with Cousins (knee) expected to miss the entire 2019-20 season, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

Even after an injury-plagued, inconsistent year in Golden State, Cousins was expected to be a key piece in a shallow Los Angeles frontcourt, but he suffered a torn ACL in a preseason workout back on Aug. 15. If the league grants the Lakers the exception, they'll be able to use half of Cousins' salary ($1.75 million) toward signing another player. At this time, it's unclear who that player might be.

Lakers' DeMarcus Cousins: Arrest warrant issued
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

An arrest warrant was issued for Cousins (knee) in connection with the misdemeanor domestic violence charge he's facing in Mobile, Ala., reports.

More specifically, Cousins is being charged with third-degree harassing communications. A former girlfriend, Christy West, is seeking a restraining order against Cousins following a recent argument related to their seven-year-old son. Cousins has thus far declined comment on the matter, while the Lakers and NBA issued statements Tuesday indicating that both parties were investing the allegations. Cousins, who signed a one-year deal with Los Angeles earlier this summer, is expected to miss most -- if not all -- of the 2019-20 season after tearing his ACL in a workout earlier this month.

Lakers' DeMarcus Cousins: Team aware of threat allegations
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

The Lakers acknowledged Tuesday that they're "investigating the allegations" against Cousins, who is accused of threatening the mother of his child, Ohm Youngmisuk of reports.

Details are still emerging after audio surfaced Tuesday of Cousins allegedly making violent threats toward an ex-girlfriend. The Lakers are aware of the situation, but at this time, it's unclear if the allegations will impact Cousins' standing with the team or with the league, per Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated. The 29-year-old suffered a torn ACL earlier this month and is expected to miss the entire 2019-20 season.

Lakers' DeMarcus Cousins: ACL tear confirmed
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins' agent, Jeff Schwartz, confirmed Thursday that his client suffered a torn ACL to his left knee and could miss the entire 2019-20 season, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.

Shams Charania of The Athletic was first to relay the news of Cousins' latest health setback, citing league sources. Cousins suffered the injury during a workout Monday in Las Vegas, where he "bumped knees" with another player and was forced to leave the court. There is no timeline for Cousins to undergo surgery, but once the procedure is completed, he'll face another extended rehab from his third serious leg injury in the last year and a half. Cousins missed nearly a full calendar year due to a left Achilles tear suffered in January 2018, then tore his quadriceps tendon in the same leg this past April during the playoffs. With Cousins out of the mix for most or all of the upcoming campaign, Anthony Davis and JaVale McGee will likely cover nearly all the minutes at center for the Lakers.

Lakers' DeMarcus Cousins: Suffers torn ACL
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins sustained a torn ACL in his left knee during a workout earlier this week, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

Cousins returned in mid-January from a torn left Achilles' tendon and went on to play 30 regular-season and eight playoff contests for the Warriors, with a torn left quadriceps tendon suffered April 15 keeping him out for 14 postseason contests. While he handled a more limited minutes load than he had before he tore his Achilles, Cousins showed occasional flashes of his prior form, which was enough for him to land a contract with the Lakers this summer. Cousins had been in line to either start at center or handle a prominent role on the second unit, but the torn ACL likely means that the big man will be sidelined for the entire 2019-20 regular season and potentially the postseason, too. Cousins' injury is not only a significant blow to the Lakers, but also his rest-of-career outlook, which had already been on the downturn due to the prior serious injury. Cousins will spend the next several months rehabbing under the supervision of the Lakers' training staff before hitting free agency again next summer, when he'll likely be forced to settle for a one-year, prove-it deal once again.

Lakers' DeMarcus Cousins: Suffers possible knee injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins is undergoing testing Thursday after possibly suffering a knee injury during a workout earlier in the week, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.

The wording is a bit unclear, but Wojnarowski notes that Cousins was working out in Las Vegas on Monday and had to leave the court after he appeared to tweak his knee. If the injury turns out to be anything serious, it would be a crushing blow to a Lakers roster that's extremely top-heavy. Cousins signed a one-year deal with the Lakers in July and is considered the favorite to start at center alongside Anthony Davis.

Lakers' DeMarcus Cousins: Latches on with Lakers
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins agreed Saturday with the Lakers on a one-year, $3.5 million contract, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.

Set to play his first full season since suffering a torn Achilles in January 2018, Cousins should slot in as the starting center with the Lakers, despite the team re-signing their top option at the position from 2018-19 (JaVale McGee) earlier in the day. In his lone season with Golden State, Cousins averaged 16.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and a combined 2.8 blocks and steals across 25.7 minutes per game. A similar workload may be in store for Cousins with both Anthony Davis -- the projected starting power forward -- and McGee on hand to fill minutes at center.

Warriors' DeMarcus Cousins: Plays 19 minutes in loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins totaled 12 points (4-9 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 4-7 FT), five rebounds, two assists and a block over 19 minutes in the Warriors' loss to the Raptors on Thursday.

Cousins came off the bench once again for an injured Kevon Looney, playing just 19 minutes in Thursday's loss. Cousins contributed some key offense in the final minutes of the game to keep Golden State in contention, but his overall contributions in this series were very disappointing. He'll be a free agent now, and there is a lot of speculation that he will not return to the Warriors next season.

Warriors' DeMarcus Cousins: Not starting Game 6
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins isn't in the starting lineup for Thursday's Game 6 against the Raptors, Nick Friedell of reports.

With Kevin Durant (Achilles) done for the season, the door appeared open for Cousins to start at center in Game 6, but it's Kevon Looney who gets the call. Cousins finished with 14 points, six rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block over 20 minutes in Game 5.

Warriors' DeMarcus Cousins: Productive off bench in win
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins registered 14 points (6-8 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 1-4 FT), six rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block across 20 minutes during the Warriors' 106-105 win over the Raptors in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday.

Cousins came off the bench to start the game with Kevin Durant (calf/Achilles) back in action, but he ended up seeing plenty of minutes after the latter went down in the first half. Cousins' final line included second-unit-leading figures in scoring and rebounds, but he committed a pair of what could have been immensely costly mistakes in the latter stages of the fourth quarter. Cousins was called for goaltending and a moving screen on consecutive defensive series in the closing seconds, the latter setting up one final possession for the Raptors that they couldn't parlay into a game-winning shot. With Durant now out once again, Cousins is likely to re-enter the starting five for Thursday's do-or-die Game 6.

Warriors' DeMarcus Cousins: Will come off bench in Game 5
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins will come off the bench in Monday's Game 5 against the Raptors, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reports.

Cousins started the last three games for the Warriors, but has been a non-factor since Game 2. Kevin Durant is returning to the starting five for Game 5, and the Warriors are going with a smaller lineup, bumping Draymond Green to the starting center. Cousins played 15 minutes in Game 4, and could see a smaller role going forward now that he's coming off the bench.

Warriors' DeMarcus Cousins: Major downturn in Game 3 loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins mustered just four points (1-7 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 2-3 FT), three rebounds, two assists and one steal across 19 minutes during the Warriors' 123-109 loss to the Raptors in Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday.

Cousins was essentially a liability on both ends of the floor in the loss, leading to him logging a modest amount of playing time despite foul trouble not truly being a factor. It was a lackluster performance in stark contrast to Cousins' Game 2 effort, when his 11-point, 10-rebound double-double was essential to the Warriors evening up the series. With the possibility that both Klay Thompson (hamstring) and Kevin Durant (calf) return for Friday's crucial Game 4, Cousins may once again be relegated to a secondary role by virtue of circumstance.

Warriors' DeMarcus Cousins: Big game in return as starter
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins totaled 11 points (3-8 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 4-4 FT), 10 rebounds, six assists and two blocks across 28 minutes in the Warriors' win over the Raptors on Sunday.

Cousins entered the starting lineup for the first time since April 15, and he had a huge impact on the win. He came up with a big double-double with points and rebounds and showed off his passing abilities with six dimes. If Cousins remains in the starting lineup for Game 3, he's a good bet for similar production with the series shifting back to Oracle Arena.

Warriors' DeMarcus Cousins: Enters starting lineup
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins will start at center in Sunday's Game 2 against the Raptors, Mark Stein of The New York Times reports.

This is a pretty surprising move given how Cousins played just eight minutes in Game 1 and didn't look completely healthy. However, it appears Steve Kerr is going full offense with his starting five in what is likely an effort to get off to a better start Sunday. Jordan Bell will come off the bench with Cousins entering the lineup.

Warriors' DeMarcus Cousins: Plays just eight minutes in return
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins tallied three points (0-2 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 3-4 FT), two assists, and two steals in eight minutes during Thursday's 118-109 loss to the Raptors.

Cousins made his return to action Thursday after missing the majority of the playoffs due to a quad injury. He was clearly limited and managed just three points in eight minutes. Despite returning to the lineup, it would be unlikely to see Cousins in a position to have a major impact on the series. Barring any setbacks, he should be ready to go for Game 2 but will almost certainly remain in a bench role.

Warriors' DeMarcus Cousins: To be active for Game 1
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Cousins (quad) will be active for Thursday's Game 1 of the Finals against the Raptors, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

Cousins' recovery from a first-round quad injury has progressed much more quickly than expected, and while he may not be at 100 percent, he'll be available as an option for coach Steve Kerr for the first time since Game 2 against the Clippers. The Warriors have found their stride in the absence of Cousins and Kevin Durant, of late, so it remains to be seen just how much Cousins will be integrated into the rotation right away.
