Welsh signed a contract with the Hornets on Friday.
Welsh was selected by the Nuggets near the end of the second round of last year's draft and spent most of his rookie season in the G League where he averaged 10.3 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. He was waived by the Nuggets just over a week ago and now will get an opportunity to crack a rebuilding Charlotte team's final roster.
Welsh was waived by the Nuggets on Tuesday, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports.
Welsh played just 36 minutes for the Nuggets last season, spending most of his time in the G League, where he averaged 10.3 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 23.0 minutes. He also played in the 2019 summer league with Denver, but posted just 6.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in 16.2 minutes per game.
Welsh totaled 11 points (5-7 FG, 1-2 3Pt), eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks across 28 minutes during the Nuggets' 95-82 loss to the Celtics in a Las Vegas Summer League game Tuesday.
The second-year center showed well in extended playing time Tuesday after having seeing a more modest 16 minutes during his first game in Las Vegas. Welsh logged 11 games of regular-season action last season as a rookie, averaging just 3.3 minutes over those contests. The 2018 second-round pick did also see 20 games of G League action and will look to continue making a strong impression for what remains of summer league play.
Welsh was recalled from the G League on Friday.
Welsh will join the Nuggets for Friday's road game against the 76ers but is not expected to see the floor unless the game gets away from either team late.
Welsh was assigned to the Iowa Wolves of the G League on Monday.
Welsh has appeared in just one game for the Nuggets in January, so he'll head back to the G League for some more consistent run. Across 14 games in the G League, Welsh is averaging 11.0 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 24.2 minutes.
Welsh as recalled from the G League on Friday.
Welsh, who will be available to play Friday against the Suns if needed, will likely not see much, if any, action during his stint in the NBA. The 22-year-old from UCLA is averaging just 3.7 minutes and 1.6 points across nine games played this season with Denver.
Welsh was assigned to the Iowa Wolves of the G League on Thursday, Harrison Wind of BSNDenver.com reports.
Welsh got to see some playing time Tuesday given the blowout nature of the Nuggets' outing with the Warriors, and the rookie scored one point in seven minutes. Now, with the Wolves scheduled to play three games over the next five days, Welsh should get an opportunity to see plenty of run in the G League.
Welsh played seven minutes and supplied one point (1-2 FT), one rebound and one assist Tuesday in the Nuggets' 142-111 loss to the Warriors.
The blowout loss allowed coach Michael Malone to empty the bench, resulting in Welsh making just his ninth appearance at the NBA level. The rookie center is a two-way player for Denver and will likely be headed back to the G League in the near future.
Welsh was sent back to the G League on Saturday, T.J. McBride of Mile High Sports reports.
Welsh scored the first points of his NBA career Friday against the Magic, posting five points, plus a rebound, in five minutes. Unless the Nuggets suffer drastic injuries, he's expected to remain a G League staple.
Welsh was recalled from the G League on Saturday, TJ McBride of Mile High Sports reports.
Welsh had been spending time with the Capital City GoGo, but he'll be back with the Nuggets on Saturday to provide emergency depth at center.
Welsh (shoulder) is available for Wednesday's summer league matchup against Toronto, Harrison Wind of BSNDenver.com reports.
Welsh, as a result of a sore shoulder, has appeared in just one summer league game for the Nuggets, but will get a second taste of the action Wednesday. During his first tilt, the rookie posted five points, three rebounds, two assists and a block in 19 minutes.
Welsh will not play during Saturday's summer league game against the Celtics due to a sore shoulder, Harrison Wind of BSNDenver.com reports.
Wind also notes that the Nuggets were planning on giving Welsh a day off either Saturday or Monday, and that his absence Saturday isn't a true indication of the seriousness of the injury. He'll likely suit up for Monday's game.
Welsh posted five points (2-5 FG, 1-2 3Pt), three rebounds, two assists and one block across 18 minutes during the Nuggets' 70-69 win over the Timberwolves in a Las Vegas Summer League contest Friday.
The 2018 second-round pick from UCLA ran with the first unit, but he ultimately saw modest minutes. Welsh flashed some of his floor-spacing prowess with a pair of three-point attempts, one of which he sank. Welsh projects to see limited NBA action during his first season after having signed a two-way deal last week, but he'll undoubtedly benefit from the seasoning he should get in summer league action.
