Uthoff was waived by the Pacers on Sunday.
Uthoff saw extended action in just one preseason game with the Pacers, as he was largely kept out of the rotation. He was given a non-guaranteed deal back in September, but was essentially just a training camp body and wasn't expected to make the final roster. Uthoff will likely start the season in the G-League, with the hope of getting called up at some point during the upcoming campaign.
Uthoff failed to be selected in the 2016 NBA Draft, but was ultimately able to latch on with the Mavericks late in the season, playing in nine games. However, most of his season was spent in the G-League, where he averaged a combined 11.1 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists across 24.4 minutes with three different teams. Most notably, he shot an impressive 46 percent from deep, so he should provide a floor-stretching big throughout training camp. Uthoff is not guaranteed a spot on the final roster, so he'll need to perform well throughout camp and the preseason to earn a spot.
Uthoff appeared in just nine games at the NBA level with the Mavericks throughout his rookie campaign during the 2016-17 season, averaging 4.4 points and 2.6 rebounds in 13 minutes per contest. He'll now have to compete for a spot at forward on the new-look Rockets, who recently sent Sam Dekker, Lou Williams and several others to the Clippers in exchange for Chris Paul. Trevor Ariza and Ryan Anderson are the top options to start at forward for Houston next season, but there could be bench minutes available for Uthoff out of the gate.
Uthoff accumulated 12 points (4-8 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 2-3 FT), nine rebounds, one assist and one steal across 27 minutes during Sunday's 124-111 loss to the Suns.
Uthoff, who has bounced back and forth between the NBA and D-League all season, has taken on an expanded role within the Mavericks' gameplan since the team fell out of playoff contention. Sunday marked the third time in four games that he's seen over 20 minutes, which is a significant bump in workload considering he only played in three NBA games prior to April 4. In his seven total games with the Mavericks, Uthoff has accumulated 24 points, 18 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals across 49 minutes. The 23-year-old forward out of Iowa might warrant consideration off the wire in deep leagues, but a 20-minute per game workload in the Mavericks' final games isn't a guarantee.
Uthoff recently returned from the D-League, and while he's only played five total minutes for Dallas this season, the Mavs have apparently been impressed enough to keep him around for the final few weeks of the regular season. The former Iowa standout will likely work out with the Mavs throughout the offseason, but his spot on the roster is unlikely to be guaranteed for next season.
