Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Heats up from long distance in Game 5
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith supplied 25 points (9-11 FG, 7-8 3Pt, 0-1 FT), three rebounds, one assist and two blocks over 41 minutes during Monday's 129-120 loss to the Warriors in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

The sharpshooting veteran was lights out from behind the arc and wrapped up the postseason with a three-game hot streak from long distance. Smith went 17-for-27 (63 percent) from three-point range on his way to averaging 18.7 points in those contests. However, it was essentially a case of too little, too late, as Smith didn't take double-digit shot attempts in the entirety of the postseason until Game 3 of the Finals. Although the veteran's 8.6 points during the regular season were his lowest since the 2005-06 campaign -- and his 34.6 percent success rate from the field was a career low -- the 31-year-old is expected back next season after signing a four-year, $57 million contract with the Cavaliers before the 2016-17 campaign.

Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Gets on track from three-point range
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith finished with 15 points (5-10 FG, 5-9 3Pt), two rebounds, one assist and one steal across 29 minutes in a 137-116 Game 4 win over the Warriors.

Smith has largely failed to make the impact from three-point range the Cavaliers expected from him in what's been an injury-plagued season, but the veteran shooting guard seems to be finding his stroke at the right time. Since the series shifted to Cleveland for the last two games, Smith has nailed 10-of-19 attempts from distance, with his final trey Friday giving the Cavaliers an NBA Finals-record 24 for the night. The pressure will now be on Smith to prove himself on the road after he was practically invisible during the first two games in Oakland, providing just three points on 1-for-6 shooting in 42 minutes.

Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: To remain in starting lineup
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith will remain in the starting lineup for Wednesday's Game 3 against the Warriors, Michael Grange of SportsNet reports.

Following two blowouts to begin the series, some had speculated that the Cavs would go with Iman Shumpert at shooting guard in place of Smith, who has more fouls than made field goals in the series. Coach Tyronn Lue dispelled that rumor at shootaround Tuesday, stating that he'll stick with the usual backcourt of Smith and Kyrie Irving. Smith will still be under the microscope, however, and if he's lackluster play on both ends continues, Shumpert could step into a larger role off the bench.

Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Minimally involved in Game 1 loss
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith mustered three points (1-4 FG, 1-2 3Pt) over 28 minutes during Thursday's 113-91 loss to the Warriors in Game 1 of the NBA finals.

With the Big Three of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love taking a combined 55 shot attempts on the night, Smith took just four shot attempts for the third straight postseason game. The lack of involvement has been a running theme throughout the majority of postseason games, as the veteran guard has yet to take double-digit shot attempts and has only taken more than five shots in three of Cleveland's 14 playoff contests. The 31-year-old has been effective from long distance, however, shooting 45.1 percent from behind the arc in the postseason. Smith could potentially see more action in Sunday's Game 2 as the Cavs look to strike more balance on offense in an attempt to even the series.

Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Good to go for Game 2
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (thumb) will start at shooting guard for Wednesday's Game 2 against the Raptors, Cavaliers play-by-play announcer John Michael reports.

Smith appeared to bang his right hand during Game 1, which aggravated a previous injury to his thumb that costed him 36 games earlier this season. However, an X-ray following the game came up clean and he was able to go through the team's morning shootaround earlier Wednesday, so he was never really in danger of missing any time. He'll remain in the starting lineup as usual and should push for a 30-plus minutes role, barring any in-game setbacks.
