Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Avoids structural damage
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (elbow) has been diagnosed with elbow soreness after undergoing an MRI, Chris Fedor of reports.

Smith has already been ruled out for Wednesday's game against Toronto, but it's good news that he's managed to avoid a significant injury. He was held out of Tuesday's practice after experiencing elbow discomfort and tests revealed no structural damage. Smith's status for Cleveland's next contest in Minnesota on Friday is up in the air, although he may be held out as a precaution.

Cavaliers' Cedi Osman: Will play, start Wednesday
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Osman (ankle) will play and start at small forward in Wednesday's regular-season opener against the Raptors, Spencer Davies of Basketball Insiders reports.

Osman missed the Cavaliers' preseason finale with a sore ankle, but it was never considered to be anything serious and he's now been cleared for the start of the regular season. Look for him to immediately slot into the starting five at small forward and Osman could push for 30-plus minutes on a night-to-night basis considering his status with the top unit.

Cavaliers' Tristan Thompson: Starting season opener
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Thompson will start at center for Wednesday's regular-season opener against the Raptors, Chris Fedor of reports.

Thompson is expected to rotate with Larry Nance as the Cavaliers starting centers depending on the opposing matchup, so it appears coach Ty Lue will prefer to go big for the season opener. In addition, Nance is dealing with an ankle injury, which could also contribute to Thompson being named the starter. Either way, look for Thompson to get the first shot with the top unit and he could be in line for added minutes if Nance isn't able to give it a go.

Cavaliers' Larry Nance: Practices Tuesday, uncertain for opener
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Nance (ankle) participated in Tuesday's practice, but his status remains uncertain for Wednesday's regular-season opener against the Raptors, Spencer Davies of Basketball Insiders reports.

Nance sprained his right ankle late last week, but appears to be ramping up his activity ahead of Wednesday's opener. He apparently looked good at Tuesday's practice and as long as there isn't increased discomfort following his recent uptick in activity, it seems as if the big man has a good shot at getting on the floor for the opener. That said, look out for another update following Wednesday's morning shootaround. If Nance were to sit out, coach Ty Lue said Ante Zizic would likely get minutes in the regular rotation. Nance recently signed a four-year, $45 million extension with the Cavaliers.

Cavaliers' J.R. Smith: Out Wednesday vs. Raptors
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (elbow) has been ruled out for Wednesday's regular-season opener against the Raptors, Spencer Davies of Basketball Insiders reports.

Smith was seen with his elbow wrapped late last week and the discomfort is apparently lingering, as the veteran remained out for Tuesday's practice. He also had an MRI performed on the elbow, though results on that test haven't been released at this point in time. Either way, Smith won't play in Wednesday's opener and could also sit out Friday's tilt versus Minnesota if he's unable to get back to practice in the next few days. Rodney Hood is expected to open the season as the starting shooting guard, while guys like Jordan Clarkson and Kyle Korver could see a slightly expanded role with Smith sidelined.
