Ex-Browns GM Phil Savage named Senior Bowl Executive Director

The Senior Bowl announced Tuesday that Phil Savage will take over June 1st as its new Executive Director.

Savage replaces Steve Hale, whose 19-year run as director saw the Senior Bowl emerge as the nation's preeminent college football all-star game. According to the game's official website, www.SeniorBowl.com, their 2012 roster featured 82 players selected in last weekend's NFL draft. By comparison, the East-West Shrine Game saw 39 players drafted.

For as successful as Hale was, however, there is optimism that the game will only improve under Savage due to his local roots and NFL ties.

Savage, 47, is a Mobile, Alabama native and has worked in the NFL since serving as part of Bill Belichick's coaching staff in Cleveland in 1991. He made the switch to the personnel side three years later and rose through the ranks of Director of College Scouting and Director of Player Personnel with the Baltimore Ravens before returning to Cleveland in 2005 as the team's Vice President and General Manager.

After three years at the helm, Savage was replaced in Cleveland. He served as a player personnel consultant in Philadelphia and became the color analyst for the University of Alabama football broadcasts on the Crimson Tide Sports Network.

According to the release, Savage will continue in this role along with his new responsibilities with the Senior Bowl.
