2013 NFL Combine: Lane Johnson continues ascent with blistering 40

Lane Johnson's steady rise up NFL Draft boards continued with an impressive unofficial 4.72-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine Saturday.

NFLDraftScout.com's No. 3-rated offensive tackle and No. 11-rated prospect overall, Johnson's stated goal the day before was to break the combine record for offensive lineman. And his unofficial time would have broken Bruce Campbell's mark from 2010. However, Arkansas Pine-Bluff's Terron Armstead ripped off an unofficial 4.71 time earlier in the morning.

Johnson enjoyed a strong week at the Senior Bowl and has been one of the fastest-rising prospects during the pre-draft process.

A quarterback only four years ago who began his Oklahoma career as a tight end, Johnson was primarily a right tackle as a junior before playing on the left side last season. Among the best pure athletes along the offensive line in this year's draft class, Johnson estimated his body fat to be 15 percent, and he lifted the 225-pound bench press 28 times on Friday.

"I don't know how big a 40-yard dash comes into the draft status for a lineman, but I think what they want to see is a good 10-yard split, a good 20-yard split, showing that you have good explosion out of your stance," he said Friday. "I think it's athleticism that puts me over the top."

The 10- and 20-yard split times will be provided to NFL teams after the conclusion of the combine.

Johnson's ability to line up on the left or right side increases his value. He is still a work-in-progress, but has all the physical tools to continue to develop into a solid starter at the next level. He isn't far behind Eric Fisher among senior offensive tackles.
