Pro Days: RB Shavers runs blistering 40 at Purdue workout

There was modest interest in Purdue's Pro Day with first-round prospect defensive tackle Kawann Short still sidelined by the hamstring injury that kept him out of last week's NFL Scouting Combine, but representatives from 18 NFL teams showed up to watch 15 prospects work out Friday.

Most scouts came to see cornerback Josh Johnsonattempt to rebound from a poor showing at the Scouting Combine last week, but they were also treated to a sizzling display of speed by running back Akeem Shavers. Shavers ran blistering unofficial 40 times between 4.35 and 4.38 seconds. He also registered a 39 1/2-inch vertical leap, a 10-foot, 10-inch broad jump and bench pressed 225 pounds, 19 times, according to Scout.com's Aaron Wilson.

Shavers remains a fringe NFL prospect, but certainly improved his chances at being a priority free agent.

Rated as a mid- to late-round prospect by NFLDraftScout.com, Johnson ran a 4.65-second 40-yard dash in Indianapolis and told GoldandBlack.com that he ran closer to the 4.4-range on Friday.

"I wanted to improve my 40 and show them that I'm faster than you think I am," said Johnson. "And not just quick. I wanted to prove I could run.

"I wasn't really confident in myself [in Indy], as far as being in that stance for three seconds and I couldn't get a good push. Here, I only had to be set a second or two ... I felt more comfortable."

Quarterback Robert Marve, a marginal pro prospect at best after having his ACL removed, ran an unofficial 4.65.

Gerald Gooden, who graduated in 2011, and 2010 graduate Keith Carlos joined 13 senior prospects for Friday's workout.

Short, NFLDraftScout.com's fourth-ranked defensive tackle and No. 26-rated prospect overall, is scheduled to hold a personal pro day on March 26.
