02/14/2012 - Former Penn State linebacker Nate Stupar has taken a knee on the field of Beaver Stadium many times before - during practice or in front of fans on game day. But on Sunday, underneath the goal post on the quiet, snow-covered field, Stupar took a knee for a very different reason. The State College native and current NFL prospect proposed to his long-time girlfriend, Marissa Lower of State College, after sending her on a scavenger hunt to places around town that signified key moments in their relationship. Stupar said he wanted her to think it was just a surprise for Valentine's Day, but he instead gave her a surprise that she'll remember for the rest of her life. "She's obviously a special girl, and I wanted to give her a special day," he said in a phone interview from Pittsburgh, where he is training for the NFL Scouting Combine later this month. Stupar said he chose to propose in the stadium not only because of its significance in his life, but because of the moments he and Lower shared there and the hardships they've gone through together. "Even though I was on the field, she was there," he said. "It shows we came here together, we're leaving together and we succeeded. We're going to band together, be together and make plays together in life. She'll always be my teammate." Stupar and Lower have been dating since August 2008. - Beth Ann Downey, The Altoona Mirror

09/29/2011 - PLAYERS TO WATCH: LB Nate Stupar - The fifth-year senior will fill in for an injured Michael Mauti at the strong-side linebacker position. Stupar played solidly in relief of Mauti last week, finishing with a team-high seven tackles and a sack. He's a solid player in pass coverage and a good blitzer, but has a history of overpursuing plays. - The Sports Xchange

09/29/2011 - KEEP AN EYE ON: LB Nate Stupar - The fifth-year senior, who has made nine career starts, is no stranger to the lineup, but Stupar's role expanded greatly when Michael Mauti was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Stupar will now be the Nittany Lions' starter on the strong side going forward. He got off to a good start against Eastern Michigan, finishing with a team-high seven tackles and a sack. - The Sports Xchange

09/26/2011 - Penn State linebacker Mike Mauti will miss the remainder of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, the university announced Sunday. An MRI yesterday confirmed that Mauti tore the ligament. He will have surgery within the next two weeks. Fifth-year senior Nate Stupar will be called upon to replace Mauti. He said not being a starter after summer camp was a wake-up call. "It puts it in perspective of where can I get better, what can I do and just wait for your opportunity to make an impression," Stupar said. "Hopefully, (Saturday) was one of those days, as sad as it was." Stupar started seven games last season but was relegated to a backup role and special teams this season. He made most of the defensive calls during Saturday's win, but defensive coordinator Tom Bradley said communication shouldn't be an issue because everyone should know the calls. - Audrey Snyder, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
