12/07/2011 - 2011 AFCA FBS COACHES' ALL-AMERICA TEAM: P Shawn Powell, Sr., Florida St., has been selected to the 2011 AFCA FBS Coaches' All-America Team announced by the American Football Coaches Association. Powell, a first team All-ACC selection from Rome, Ga., led the nation in overall punting (47.0) and net punting (42.0) becoming the first Atlantic Coast Conference punter since 2005 Ray Guy Award Winner Ryan Plackemeier to lead the nation in both. "This is a great honor," Powell said. "It feels very good to be recognized. I worked very hard the last four years. I got off to a bit of a slow start this year but I think things improved every week throughout the season. It just goes to show you that hard work does pay off. It is a great feeling to know I will always be known as an All-American. I really couldn't ask for any better honor." Powell recorded 21 punts in excess of 50 yards and his 69-yarder against Oklahoma was also the longest on the season among ACC punters. He has seven punts of 60 yards on the season giving him 11 in his career. Of his 49 punts on the season, 21 (43 percent) have been downed inside the opponents' 20-yard line, including 12 inside the 10 and 63 percent of his punts are not returned. - FSU football

11/14/2011 - WEEK 11 ACC SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK: Shawn Powell, Florida State, Sr., P, 6-4, 235, Rome, Ga. Powell was nothing short of brilliant in helping the Seminoles win the field position game against the rival Hurricanes. He punted five times for 274 yards - a 54.8-yard average - and with the help of his coverage units finished with a net average of 47.4 yards. Powell's opening punt of the game sailed 51 yards and was angled out of bounds at the Miami 1-yard line. He also pinned the ???Canes back at their own 6-yard line with a 39-yard punt - his shortest of the game. In all he had four punts over 50 yards, including two over 60 (66, 63). The ACC leader in punting (47.1), Powell would lead the nation if he had two more punt attempts to meet the minimum standard of 3.6 per game. The Seminoles are ranked second nationally in net punting average. For his performance against Miami, Powell was selected National Punter of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards. - ACC football

10/31/2011 - WEEK 9 ACC SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK: Shawn Powell, Florida State, Sr., P, 6-4, 235, Rome, Ga. Powell punted only three times for a 41.3 yard average, but his contributions far exceeded the numbers. Two of his punts were of the rugby variety, aimed at neutralizing NC State return sensation T.J. Graham, and proved quite successful. Graham managed just one punt return for 1 yard, thanks to Powell's directional punting and his teammates' exceptional coverage work. His 41.0 net punting average for the game matches FSU's net punting average on the season, which ranks sixth among all FBS schools. Powell continues to lead the ACC with a 45.2 punting average and is currently the top-ranked punter, by average, in Florida State history. - ACC football
