04/19/2012 - 04/18 NFL DRAFT SCOUT RISER: Markelle Martin, FS, Oklahoma State...In a weak safety class, the No. 2 spot after Mark Barron has been up for grabs for some time. Martin seemed to be leading candidate for that spot until a knee injury sidelined him in January. He was finally able to work out for scouts last week in Stillwater, only days before the draft weekend. Martin looked better than expected on his knee, pushing the envelope and not holding back for the several teams in attendance, attempting to show the injury isn't a large concern. He ran his 40-yard dash in the 4.6s and looked natural in his movements. - Dane Brugler, NFLDraftScout.com

02/24/2012 - Former Oklahoma State safety Markelle Martin will not run or participate in position drills at the NFL Scouting Combine because of a knee injury, he announced on his personal Twitter account Friday. Martin, who is projected as a middle-to-late round pick, posted that he has a pinched nerve and fluid on his knee and that the injury happened "a few weeks ago." He has been training for the combine at OSU. Martin will still interview with NFL teams in Indianapolis. Defensive backs are scheduled to work out Tuesday. Martin was an All-American selection by the American Football Coaches Association and the Associated Press in 2011 after tallying 74 tackles, 11 pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. - Gina Mizell, News Oklahoma

01/02/2012 - Scouting the Oklahoma State run defense: Strip it and pick it. That is Oklahoma State's motto as it chases the FBS record for most takeaways in the season. With 42 takeaways, the Cowboys need four more to reach that record mark. Sometimes their zeal for punching the ball loose leads to poor fundamentals. This is a defense that can be gouged if opponents protect the football. The Cowboys allow 180.1 yards rushing on average to rank 84th nationally, yet they play in a conference where most opponents prefer to throw the ball. LB Shaun Lewis, FS Daytawion Lowe and SS Markelle Martin are the top run-stoppers. - The Sports Xchange

12/10/2011 - 2011 ALL-BIG 12 FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DB Markelle Martin, Oklahoma State, Sr., has been selected All-Big 12 Conference First Team for the 2011 college football season as voted on by the league's 10 head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own players. - Oklahoma State football

09/08/2011 - SCOUTING THE DEFENSE: While the 34-point allowance seems a bit startling, remember that two of the touchdowns for Louisiana-Lafayette came off the interceptions it returned for scores. With just five starters returning, however, questions exist as to how well the Cowboys can defend Arizona and its explosive attack. A veteran secondary led by S Markelle Martin should be sturdy in pass coverage, but the Cowboys must also apply quarterback pressure. Against Louisiana-Lafayette, five sacks were recorded, all by different defenders. The Cowboys did not allow a touchdown until late in the fourth quarter. QUOTE TO NOTE: "We talked before the (Louisiana-Lafayette) game about laying a foundation, and we did that. Everybody came out fast and we started physical with minimal mistakes. We're proud of how we started, and we want to carry that momentum into Week Two." Oklahoma State S Markelle Martin. - The Sports Xchange

08/25/2011 - The defense will be imposing. Veteran coordinator Bill Young recognized before last season that the Cowboys' productive offense, which averaged league bests of 520.2 yards and 44.2 points, enabled his defense to gamble more. Goofs could be overcome because the offense was capable of answering with points. The result was a plus-12 turnover margin. Backups learned those techniques, but they also must be sound after the Cowboys lost six defensive starters. Safeties Markelle Martin and Johnny Thomas return and will be counted on for leadership. - The Sports Xchange

08/09/2011 - 2011 PRESEASON ALL-BIG 12 CONFERENCE TEAM (MEDIA): DB Markelle Martin, Oklahoma State, Sr, has been selected to the 2011 Preseason All-Big 12 Football team in voting conducted by media representatives who cover the Conference. Martin, a senior from Wichita Falls, Texas, has earned a reputation as one of the biggest hitters in the country and looks to be the leader of the secondary in his third year as a starter. He was voted as the defensive player of the game in the 2010 Valero Alamo Bowl, was an all-conference candidate and was the winner of OSU's Nate Fleming Award for his academic performance last year. - Oklahoma State football

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is awarded annually to the nation's best defensive player by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club. - Football Writers Association of America

05/26/2011 - PLAYERS TO WATCH IN 2011: Safety Markelle Martin established himself as the biggest hitter among the OSU defenders and was instinctive breaking on the ball, both in coverage and run support. Led the Cowboys in pass breakups. - The Sports Xchange
