04/30/2012 - A closer look at the 49ers' picks: Round 5/165 -- Darius Fleming OLB, 6-2, 245 Notre Dame...Will start out on special teams and could become a third-down pass rusher. - The Sports Xchange

04/09/2012 - There's little doubt the scouts and coaches in attendance noted that Fleming responded like you're supposed to in the NFL. After falling down, he got right back up and ran the best 40 times of his life - 4.57 and 4.52. At 6-2 and 247 pounds, he was two pounds heavier than he was at the combine, but he was two-tenths of a second faster in the 40, too. ??????That makes him the third-fastest linebacker in the country,'' said Elias Karras, Fleming's trainer at EFT Sports Performance in Highland Park. ??????The scouts couldn't believe it. A couple of them said, ???We were hoping he would run in the 4.6s, and he hit 4.5s.' They were flabbergasted.'' So was Fleming. ??????I kind of shocked myself a little bit,'' Fleming said. ??????I was aiming for a good time, and Elias kept telling me, ???I believe you can get in the 4.5s.' And I was getting closer, but I never actually reached it. ??????But at Notre Dame I was comfortable. My nerves settled down being at home. I was with [teammates] I've been with the last couple of years, so I was able to really showcase what I could do.'' There are still 17 days until the draft, but it might turn out that Fleming made himself some money and gave himself a better opportunity to establish himself in the NFL with his pro-day effort. He was projected as a late-round pick or possible undrafted free agent before the combine. Now, ??????I have no doubt he will get drafted,'' said Karras, who has been training players for the draft for 10 years. - Mark Potash, Chicago Sun-Times

04/04/2012 - The two Irish players who likely helped themselves the most Tuesday were workout partners, outside linebacker Darius Fleming and cornerback Robert Blanton. NFLDraftScout.com projects both players could come off the board in the middle rounds. The others who worked out in varying degrees for the NFL personnel types Tuesday were cornerback Gary Gray, offensive tackle Taylor Dever, offensive guard Trevor Robinson, kicker David Ruffer, and running back Jonas Gray -- roughly four months removed from reconstructive knee surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The 6-2, 247-pound Fleming, who some teams like as an inside linebacker, lowered his time in the 40-yard dash from 4.74 at the NFL Combine in late February to 4.54 on Tuesday. Blanton, projected as a safety by many teams, went from 4.7 at the combine to 4.53. - Jeff Reynolds, The Sports Xchange

04/03/2012 - Nine former Notre Dame football players participated Tuesday in the school's annual Pro Day, hoping to improve their draft stock in the eyes of coaches and scouts. Robert Blanton, Taylor Dever, Darius Fleming, Michael Floyd, Gary Gray, Jonas Gray, Trevor Robinson, David Ruffer and Harrison Smith all participated in the Pro Day. Receiver Michael Floyd, who set a plethora of Irish records during his four-year career, is expected to be chosen earliest of the Irish hopefuls come the NFL Draft on April 26. Floyd did not run a 40-yard dash or participate in bench press Tuesday, but caught passes from former teammate Jimmy Clausen, a current quarterback for the Carolina Panthers. Linebacker Darius Felmming caused the biggest stir, running a 40-yard dash in of 4.54 seconds, which would have ranked third among linebackers at the NFL Combine. Running back Jonas Gray not only participated, but also ran and cut on the field despite being only months removed from knee surgery. - Marcus Wekenmann, WNDU-TV 16 News, South Bend, Ind

07/18/2011 - 2011 BUTKUS AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Darius Fleming, Notre Dame, has been selected one of 51 linebackers named to the 2011 Butkus Award Preseason Watch List for the 2011 college football season. The award is handed out annually to the top linebacker in college football. - The Butkus Foundation
