2014 NFL Draft: Raiders get B for picking QB Derek Carr at No. 36
The Oakland Raiders selected former Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr with the fourth pick in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday.
Leading up to the NFL Draft, Derek Carr said he was 'absolutely' the best quarterback available in the 2014 class. Now he's going to get a chance to prove that in Oakland after the Raiders made him the fourth pick in the second round (36th overall) of the NFL Draft on Friday.
At least three other teams didn't think Carr was the best quarterback available. Jacksonville, Cleveland and Minnesota all drafted quarterbacks in the first round on Thursday before Carr was finally selected by the Raiders.
CBSSports.com senior writer Pete Prisco likes the pick, if only because the Raiders got the guy they wanted.
The Raiders loved Carr all along, and they need a QB, so I get it. In the second round, it's a good pick. GRADE: B http://t.co/KPxAyHqyNs— Pete Prisco (@PriscoCBS) May 9, 2014
The former Fresno State quarterback was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year in 2013 after leading the nation with 5,082 passing yards and 50 touchdown passes for the 11-2 Bulldogs. Carr was also the Offensive Player of the Year in 2012, making him just the second player in conference history to win the award in back-to-back seasons.
The knock on Carr is that he might have trouble adjusting to taking snaps under center after spending most of his college career in shotgun formation. Rob Rang of NFLDraftScout.com also points out that Carr 'will rush passes when blitzed and he has a tendency to overthrow his targets.'
Carr becomes the highest drafted player out of Fresno State since 2010 when the Chargers took running back Ryan Mathews with the 12th overall pick. Carr also represents the highest drafted Bulldog quarterback since 2002 when his brother David was selected No. 1 overall by the Texans.
