2014 NFL Draft: Texans get B- for picking Xavier Su'a-Filo No. 33
The Houston Texans selected former UCLA offensive lineman Xavier Su'a-Filo with the first pick in the second round of Friday's NFL Draft.
It's been a good NFL Draft for UCLA. The Texans drafted former Bruins offensive guard Xavier Su'a-Filo with the first pick of the second round (33rd overall) of the NFL Draft on Friday, marking the first time since 1991 that UCLA has had two players taken in the first 33 picks.
Before Su'a-Filo was taken by Houston, the Vikings nabbed linebacker Anthony Barr with the ninth overall pick on Thursday.
Back to Su'a-Filo though, the 23-year-old took a unique route to the NFL. After starting 13 games as a freshman at UCLA in 2009, Su'a-Filo went on a two-year Mormon mission and didn't return to football until the 2012 season. Over his final two years, Su'a-Filo started 27 games for the Bruins before enventually declaring for the draft after the 2013 season despite having a year of eligibilitiy left.
The Texans will be getting a versatile offenive lineman who can play either guard or tackle, although he'll most likely be playing guard in the NFL. Of Su'a-Filo's 40 college starts, 19 came at left tackle and 21 came at left guard.
CBSSports.com senior writer Pete Prisco thought the team had other needs it could've addressed.
This is a safe pick for a team that needs line help. He's a mauler and will be rookie starter Why not Nix? GRADE: B- http://t.co/KPxAyHqyNs— Pete Prisco (@PriscoCBS) May 9, 2014
Su'a-Filo was one of the most well-rounded prospects available and there's a good chance he could be starting from Day One in Houston.
It's not often that UCLA offensive linemen get drafted so high. Over the past 20 years, the only former Bruin lineman to get taken higher than Su'a-Filo was Jonathan Ogden, who was drafted fourth overall by the Ravens in 1996.
As for money? Here's the difference between going 33 vs. 32.
Xavier Su'a Filo will make about $1.3M less than Teddy Bridgewater over 4 years. Su'a-Filo won't have a 5th year option as a 2nd rounder.— Joel Corry (@corryjoel) May 9, 2014
