Mettenberger didn't enter the draft as one of the best quarterback prospects for various reasons, most of which had nothing to do with his ability to throw the football. In addition to the off-field issues, he has also battled injuries in recent years.
Mettenberger suffered an ACL injury in December that prevented him from working out for NFL teams for much of the spring, and days before the draft it was revealed Mettenberger had a diluted sample at the NFL combine's drug test. Additionally, NFL.com reported Wednesday morning that a number of NFL teams have medically flagged him because of a back condition called spondylolysis.
Overlooking all that, Mettenberger has one of the best arms in the draft. NFLDraftScout.com senior analyst Rob Rang writes that he "is a traditional drop-back passer with a lot of under-center snaps and impressive NFL throws," and warns that Mettenberger while "isn't a bad athlete his naturally slow feet are a concern."
That said, Mettenberger has shown steady improvement throughout his career and now he'll get a chance to compete for an NFL roster spot.
