Pete Prisco's Grade: B

CBSSports.com senior NFL writer Pete Prisco gives the Vikings a B for getting a steal in Cook.

"From a talent standpoint, it's a steal. He has star ability, but there are concerns off the field."

The former Florida State star was the third running taken overall in the draft, behind Leonard Fournette and Christian McCaffery.

After one of the biggest slides of the 2017 draft, Dalvin Cook finally came off the board thanks to a team that wanted him so bad, they actually traded up to get him. To land Cook the Vikings traded up from the 48th spot in the second round to the 41st spot, which had been held by the Bengals. To make the move, the Vikings had to send a fourth-round pick (128th overall) to Cincinnati.

Although Cook was projected as a first-round pick, the former Florida State running back dropped to the second round due to several red flags. Not only were teams concerned by an injured shoulder, but they were also worried about his off-field behavior.

For Cook, who holds Florida State's single-season rushing record, it will be hard to make his mark early with the Vikings. The rookie will be competing for carries in a crowded backfield that includes Jerick McKinnon and the newly-signed Latavius Murray

The Vikings are going from a one-horse backfield with Adrian Peterson to maybe having too many horses.

Fantasy impact

"This was among the worst destinations for Dalvin Cook. Crowded backfield with Murray and McKinnon, and a bad offensive line. Cook was considered the second-best rookie running back coming into the NFL Draft, and he could still end up in that spot. But he has some big things to overcome, and he's a No. 3 Fantasy running back at best in seasonal leagues. In rookie-only drafts, Cook should go after Leonard Fournette and Christian McCaffrey for sure." -- Jamey Eisenberg

Dave Richard has more on the pick, explaining why Cook will be the Vikings' best running back.

NFL comparison

Marshall Faulk: It's a lofty comparison, but we're going to use Faulk here. Sure, it's unfair to compare a college prospect to a Pro Football Hall of Famer, but stylistically the comp fits for Cook. Who knows what type of NFL resume Cook will accumulate and if it will come close to Faulk's storied career. But the on-field talent is similar from the size to the athleticism and the versatility to be an offensive weapon.
