Watch Now: NFC West Playoff Chances: 49ers (2:41)

The San Francisco 49ers were the surprise team of the 2019 season, winning the NFC championship and coming a quarter away from taking home Super Bowl LIV -- having a 10-point lead with 8:53 to play in search of their sixth Super Bowl title. San Francisco won't be sneaking up on any team in the NFL this season, as the 49ers are one of the favorites to repeat as NFC champions and reach Super Bowl LV in Tampa.

San Francisco tinkered its roster a bit during the offseason, trading DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round pick but re-signing Arik Armstead to a five-year extension. The 49ers also bolstered their defensive line by selecting Javon Kinlaw with the No. 14 overall pick. San Francisco lost Emmanuel Sanders in free agency, but selected Brandon Aiyuk with the No. 25 overall pick in the draft and signed Travis Benjamin

Joe Staley retired, but the 49ers acted quickly in replacing the Pro Bowl left tackle by acquiring seven-time Pro Bowler Trent Williams from the Washington Redskins. Raheem Mostert is back as the No. 1 running back with Tevin Coleman inserted as the No. 2 after San Francisco traded Matt Breida to the Miami Dolphins. The 49ers also restructured Jerick McKinnon's deal, banking on him two contribute after two injury-plagued seasons.

The 49ers return 10 starters from the No. 2 ranked defense in 2019, including the entire secondary from the No. 1 pass defense. Expectations will be high for San Francisco, still in search for its sixth Super Bowl title.

The 49ers' 2020 schedule has been released and we're giving a week-by-week prediction for all 16 games. Courtesy of William Hill Sports Book, we'll provide over/under win totals for every opponent along with lines for Week 1 and Week 2. In case you're wondering, the 49ers over/under is 10.5 -- so let's see if they surpass that threshold.

Week 1 vs. Cardinals

Line: 49ers -8
Opponent win total: 7.0

Prediction: The 49ers kick off their NFC title defense against one of the most improved teams in the division in Arizona. This game won't be a cakewalk for San Francisco, as the league's top-ranked pass defense from 2019 will be tested against the Cardinals' new-look pass offense (which includes DeAndre Hopkins). San Francisco will be tested, but the 49ers will try to keep Arizona's offense off the field by using their zone-run scheme. The Cardinals are better, but aren't ready for the 49ers yet as San Francisco will wear them down by the fourth quarter. 49ers 24-20

Projected win record: 1-0

Week 2 at Jets

Line: Jets +5.5
Opponent win total: 6.5

Prediction: The 49ers head for the first of many East Coast trips this season, playing at MetLife Stadium on back-to-back weeks. This is a trap game for San Francisco, as New York was 7-6 in games Sam Darnold started last season. The Jets were No. 2 in the league in run defense, so the 49ers will likely have to rely on Jimmy Garoppolo's arm to win this one. Look for a big game from George Kittle to give the 49ers a close victory. 49ers 23-17

Projected win record: 2-0

Week 3 at Giants

Opponent win total: 6.5

Prediction: Whether the 49ers spend a week in New York is up for debate, but they'll be used to this East Coast start by now. The Giants are a better team, but they have a lot of work to do in the months going forward. This could be the game Aiyuk introduces himself to the NFL against one of the league's worst pass defenses (even with James Bradberry in the fold). The 49ers pass rush has a field day against a rebuilding offensive line. 49ers 34-13

Projected win record: 3-0

Week 4 vs. Eagles (SNF)

Opponent win total: 9.5

Prediction: The Eagles will present a challenge to the 49ers, but San Francisco's pass defense is going to give Carson Wentz fits throughout the night. San Francisco should have their way against the young Philadelphia receivers, using the press coverage to neutralize the Eagles' speed. San Francisco will struggle to run the ball, making this another game Kittle and Ross Dwelley make an impact. Kittle scores a late touchdown to keep the 49ers unbeaten. 49ers 24-17

Projected win record: 4-0

Week 5 vs. Dolphins

Opponent win total: 6.0

Prediction: After a thrilling win over the Eagles, the 49ers get their second rebuilding team in three weeks in the Dolphins. Breida will be looking for vengeance against his former team as Miami will look to use his speed for big plays against the 49ers defense that is starting to round into form. This may be the game Tua Tagovailoa becomes the starting quarterback in Miami for good as the San Francisco pass rush should put plenty of pressure against Ryan Fitzpatrick. 49ers 31-16

Projected win record: 5-0

Week 6 vs. Rams (SNF)

Opponent win total: 8.5

Prediction: The resurgent Rams will be a tough test for the 49ers, who look to emulate San Francisco's zone-run scheme with a running back-by-committee of their own in Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson. San Francisco's pass catchers will struggle against Los Angeles' secondary, as Garoppolo will have his first bad game of the year. San Francisco is a better team than Los Angeles, but teams can't win them all. Just an off day for San Francisco. Rams 27-17

Projected win record: 5-1

Week 7 at Patriots

Opponent win total: 9.0

Prediction: Back to the East Coast for the 49ers, who will face the Patriots with Jarrett Stidham at quarterback. How good (or bad) the Patriots will be is anyone's guess, which makes this game so intriguing. New England's defense will give San Francisco a hard time, but the 49ers will get a 100-yard effort out of Mostert. This isn't going to be a high-scoring game and one the Patriots offense will need to score 17 points to beat San Francisco. That isn't going to happen. 49ers 14-10

Projected win record: 6-1

Week 8 at Seahawks

Opponent win total: 9.5

Prediction: What a challenge that awaits the 49ers, heading to Seattle in a rematch of the Week 17 thriller. Russell Wilson was sacked six times in the two matchups last season, but was much better in the matchup at home. The Seahawks having a healthy contingent at running back will help Wilson and the pass offense, especially with big play wideouts like Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf. Wilson does enough to get Seattle a close victory. Seahawks 24-23

Projected win record: 6-2

Week 9 vs. Packers (TNF)

Opponent win total: 9.0

Prediction: A rematch of the NFC Championship Game is in store for the 49ers, who outscored the Packers 74-28 in two meetings last season. The 49ers were clearly the better team in both matchups, rushing for 285 yards and four touchdowns in the title game blowout. Mostert and Coleman will be called upon to demoralize an already susceptible Packers run defense. San Francisco just has a clear advantage in this matchup. This one could get ugly in a hurry, especially on a short week. 49ers 31-20

Projected win record: 7-2

Week 10 at Saints

Opponent win total: 10.5

Prediction: Beating the Saints in New Orleans last season was the signal the 49ers weren't just taking advantage of an easy schedule -- they were legit Super Bowl contenders. The Saints got even better with the addition of Emmanuel Sanders and Malcolm Jenkins this offseason, showcasing they are all in -- just in case this is Drew Brees' final season. The 49ers pass defense will be tested once again, but this time they will get worn down by the quick Brees passes. San Francisco can beat New Orleans, but this one will go the Saints way. Saints 27-24

Projected win record: 7-3

Week 11: BYE

Week 12 at Rams

Opponent win total: 8.5

Prediction: The 49ers will get vengeance against a Rams team that beat them at home in Week 6, also known as the game Mostert runs for over 150 yards and collects a pair of touchdowns. Deebo Samuel also has a big game against the Rams secondary, as Kyle Shanahan makes the adjustments necessary to pull off a big NFC West win. Big victory for the 49ers coming off a bye. 49ers 34-21

Projected win record: 8-3

Week 13 vs. Bills (MNF)

Opponent win total: 9.0

Prediction: This will be a tough game for the 49ers, but the Bills also face one of their biggest tests of the season in heading to San Francisco. A defensive battle will be on the horizon as both teams will attempt to one-up each other in the ground game. If the 49ers can slow down the explosive playmaking of Devin Singletary, they can force Josh Allen to win the game with his arm. Against the league's best pass defense, that isn't happening. 49ers 20-14

Projected win record: 9-3

Week 14 vs. Redskins

Opponent win total: 5.5

Prediction: After that brutal five-team gauntlet San Francisco just faced, it will be nice for the 49ers to get a rebuilding team in the Redskins. Washington's offensive line is a dream scenario for San Francisco's pass rush in this one, which won't be Dwayne Haskins' best day. The 49ers have a brutal stretch at the end of the year, but they'll get to 10 wins and need just one win in their final three games to pass that 10.5-win threshold. 49ers 41-17

Projected win record: 10-3

Week 15 at Cowboys (SNF)

Opponent win total: 9.5

Prediction: The 49ers pass defense is an excellent matchup for the Cowboys receiver trio of Amari Cooper, CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup -- possibly the best San Francisco will face all year. Add in Ezekiel Elliott to the mix and the 49ers have a tough task ahead. This will be the shootout the 49ers will engage in this season, but one they'll come up a bit short. Dallas always seems to win one game against a better team at home per year -- this is the one. Cowboys 37-34

Projected win record: 10-4

Week 16 at Cardinals

Opponent win total: 7.0

Prediction: A Week 1 rematch is on the horizon in Arizona, but the Cardinals will be a much improved team this time around. Fresh off a tough loss to Dallas, the 49ers pass defense will have their hands full with Hopkins and Christian Kirk. Let's not forget Kyler Murray will be coming into his own as a quarterback. Cardinals steal a win in the desert as they are fighting for their playoff lives. The 49ers will play the Seahawks for the NFC West title the next week. Cardinals 28-23

Projected win record: 10-5

Week 17 vs. Seahawks

Opponent win total: 9.5

Prediction: The NFC West title is up for grabs for the second consecutive season, but home-field advantage won't be at stake for the 49ers. That won't matter to San Francisco, as the 49ers will flex their muscles as a Super Bowl contender with a huge day from Mostert and Coleman against Seattle. Add in a pair of Kittle touchdowns in the biggest game of the year. 49ers win the division and prepare for a deep playoff run. They also take the over on 10.5 wins. 49ers 27-20

Projected win record: 11-5
