49ers sign QB Seneca Wallace to one-year deal
The 49ers added a fifth quarterback to their roster on Thursday when they signed Seneca Wallace to a one-year deal.
The 49ers signed quarterback Seneca Wallace to a one-year deal on Thursday, giving the team five quarterbacks on the 90-man roster. Wallace joins the Niner quarterback club of Colin Kaepernick, Scott Tolzien, Colt McCoy and rookie B.J. Daniels.
Wallace will presumably be battling with Tolzien, McCoy and Daniels for the right to backup Kaepernick.
This won't be the first time Wallace and McCoy have been teammates, the two quarterbacks played together for two seasons in Cleveland (2010-11). The Browns head coach in 2010 was Eric Mangini, who now serves as the 49ers senior offensive consultant. Wallace started four games for Mangini in 2010 while McCoy started eight for a Browns team that finished the season 5-11.
Cleveland cut Wallace after the 2011 season and the eight-year veteran spent 2012 out of football. Before playing in Cleveland, Wallace spent five seasons in Seattle.
To make room for Wallace on the roster, the 49ers cut wide receiver Ricardo Lockette. Apparently Lockette didn't get any bonus points for being Kaepernick's roommate or being forced to take playbook quizzes in odd places.
