49ers vs. Broncos odds, predictions: 2019 Preseason Week 2 NFL picks from top-rated Vegas insider
R.J. White has locked in his picks for Monday's exhibition matchup between the 49ers and Broncos
To conclude Week 2 of the 2019 NFL preseason schedule, the San Francisco 49ers visit the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET. This matchup is rather unique because it's the only Monday night game during the preseason, so it should draw heavy action as the lone matchup of the day. The 49ers won and covered the spread in their preseason opener, while the Broncos are one of two teams that will play five preseason games this year (Atlanta is the other). The Broncos split their first two games straight-up and against the spread, and Monday's line has swung wildly after beginning the day with Denver favored by 1.5 points. Now, the Broncos are one-point underdogs, while the over-under for total points scored is 40.5 in the latest Broncos vs. 49ers odds. Before you make any 49ers vs. Broncos picks or any 2019 NFL predictions of your own, you need to hear what NFL expert R.J. White has to say.
White has been SportsLine's top pro football analyst for two-plus seasons. Over that span, the CBS Sports NFL editor and nationally-recognized NFL Draft expert has gone 214-164 on NFL picks against the spread, returning more than $3,200 to $100 bettors.
White was all over the Patriots covering in the 2019 Super Bowl, nailing the year's biggest sporting event for the legions that follow him. White said he wouldn't trust Rams QB Jared Goff in a big spot, and Goff's bumbling performance was key to New England's 13-3 win.
The stats guru, whose picks are coveted by fans everywhere, has cashed huge in the world's most prestigious handicapping tournament, the Westgate Las Vegas SuperContest, twice in the past four years, and anyone who has followed his lead has reaped huge rewards.
Now, White has locked in on Niners vs. Broncos on Monday night. We can tell you he's leaning over, but his most confident pick is against the spread. He's only sharing that pick at SportsLine.
White knows Broncos fans were a bit skeptical when team boss John Elway replaced one defensive-minded head coach, the fired Vance Joseph, with another this offseason in Vic Fangio. Thus, it's likely that Fangio will want to prove to the Denver faithful on Monday Night Football that he was the right choice. In addition, the Broncos have one of the best home-field advantages in the NFL, with the thin air in the Mile High City sometimes wreaking havoc on opponents who aren't used to it.
While veteran Joe Flacco is expected to start again this week under center, second-round pick Drew Lock has impressed thus far. After last week's loss in Seattle in which Lock threw for 180 yards and a touchdown as well as a two-point conversion, Fangio said the rookie from Missouri "threw it pretty good." Lock could start pushing Flacco sooner rather than later. Lock had 99 touchdowns during four seasons at Missouri and threw for over 12,000 yards.
But just because Denver has home-field advantage doesn't mean it will cover the 49ers vs. Broncos spread.
The 49ers' two backup quarterbacks, C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens, have more game experience over their Broncos counterparts, and backup QBs will still take most the snaps on Monday. Beathard and Mullens continue to battle for the No. 2 spot behind Garoppolo. Beathard was 13-for-17 for 141 yards and a TD in last week's win over Dallas, while Mullens was 11-for-17 for 105 yards and a score. Meanwhile, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan is 5-4 against the spread in his preseason head coaching career.
White has broken down the depth charts of both teams on Monday Night Football and unearthed the critical X-factor that has him leaning hard to one side of the spread. You can only see what it is, and which team to back, at SportsLine.
