Ahmad Brooks records best encroachment penalty ever

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The 49ers have done a stupendous job of keeping the Panthers out of the red zone in the Divisional Round matchup, which is the only reason Carolina's not up more than 10-6. But Ahmad Brooks did make one huge, tiny mistake in the red zone.

Trying to time a snap near the goal line, Brooks jumped before Cam Newton could snap the ball. I think this may be against the rules of football.

There's a lot to love here, particularly the Panthers offensive line basically staying perfectly still. But don't sleep on Newton's ability to sell Brooks hitting him.

Newton's lucky he doesn't play in the NBA. Otherwise he'd be hearing from Adam Silver.

It was actually a really heads-up thing for Cam to do. If he draws a personal foul flag from Brooks on that play, it would be half the distance ot the goal line and an automatic first down for Carolina.

Instead, they simply replayed third down and Mike Tolbert got stuffed, which meant Ron Rivera had to settle for a Graham Gano field goal instead of getting six.
