After an offseason of mostly bad news (and, come to think of it, a bad news cycle for most of the 2013 season), Aldon Smith's luck seems to be turning slightly more positive lately.

San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke defended his team on why it wouldn't open a door and throw Smith away, and the team then exercised its fifth-year option on Smith, meaning he could earn close to $10 million for the 2015 season.

Perhaps that's why Smith felt compelled to update his Twitter account for the first time in about three weeks Monday night. This is what the 49ers standout linebacker wrote.

Last month, Smith was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on a felony charge of falsely reporting a bomb threat, but a few weeks ago, the case was referred to the L.A. district attorney's office for misdemeanor consideration.

Smith also was arrested on a DUI charge last September, and he ended up in rehab for a number of weeks.

All of it led former 49ers star Ronnie Lott to say recently, "I felt bad for him. He's got so much ahead of him as a person. Forget football -- as a person. I'm worried about him as an individual. ... I'm sure that the people that are working with him with the 49ers will do a good job."

Either way, here's hoping Smith follows his own Twitter advice, stays positive and keeps himself out of trouble.
