Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith has dealt with a lot over the past two years. Smith hurt his leg so severely during the 2018 season that he had to undergo 17 surgeries to repair the injury. On top of all of that, the former top pick had a severe infection in his leg that threatened his life.

On Thursday, Smith's wife, Elizabeth, shared a heartfelt Instagram post in honor of Smith's 36th birthday in which she posted a photo of the couple. In addition, she shared an inspirational video of Smith taking part in football drills.

"Happy Happy Birthday to this handsome, hard working man," Elizabeth wrote. "The last week we've been overwhelmed with love, support and sweet messages. We cannot thank you enough. #project11 was a look into what the last 18 months have been (mostly Alex refusing to give up). I am in awe of his perseverance everyday. He just keeps getting stronger and refuses to give up… Forever grateful."

It's unclear when exactly the video was taken, but Smith is wearing a leg sleeve. Still, the Redskins quarterback looks fairly mobile for a guy that has had 17 surgeries over the past two years. Smith definitely can still sling it and moves at a fairly decent pace.

ESPN recently aired an E60 episode called Project 11 in which Smith's path to recovery was chronicled. Smith faced the possibility of having his leg amputated due to the infection, but it ultimately it didn't come to that.

Most players would be forced to call it a career after such a devastating injury. However, Smith still hasn't given up and appears determined to make an NFL comeback.
