Andre Johnson: I'd like Texans to draft a receiver in first round
Houston wide receiver Andre Johnson would like to see Houston draft a receiver in the first round of the NFL draft, something the Texans haven't done since 2003 when they drafted Johnson.
If it were up to Houston wide receiver Andre Johnson, the Texans would spend their first round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft on a wide receiver. Drafting a wide receiver in the first round is something Houston hasn't done since 2003 when the Texans drafted -- you guessed it, Andre Johnson.
"I'd like to have another [receiver]. I'm all for it," Johnson told the Houston Chronicle. "I've asked for it for awhile. The more weapons we have, the better it will be for the team."
Johnson may want Houston to draft a wide receiver, but there may not be a first-round worthy receiver left when the Texans pick at No. 27. In CBSSports.com's latest draft rankings, only three receivers have been given first-round grades -- West Virginia's Tavon Austin (ranked 13th overall), Tennessee's Cordarrelle Patterson (14th) and Southern California's Robert Woods (26th). Cal's Keenan Allen just missed the first-round cut at No. 34 overall.
"If we draft a receiver, I'm going to help him as much as I can. I'll answer any questions he has because I want him to perform well," Johnson said.
Houston general manager Rick Smith may be reluctant to draft a receiver in the first round after the Texans picked two -- DeVier Posey and Keshawn Martin -- in the first four rounds of the 2012 draft.
Johnson thinks the Texans should build on last year's draft, "If we're able to add another guy, it would probably be the best group of receivers we've had since I've been here," Johnson said. "Adding another guy [to go with] Posey, [Lestar] Jean and Keshawn -- that's a lot of talent. Not only would it be good for now, but it would be good for our future."
Speaking of future's, Johnson said he'd like to play until at least 2017.
"When I came into this league, my goal was to play 10 years," said Johnson, who just finished his 10th season. "Now I want to play five more."
Johnson has seemingly only become better with age, the veteran receiver had a career-high 1,598 yards receiving last season on 112 catches, the second highest total of his career.
