Andrew Luck sets single-season rookie passing-yards record

With one game left in the 2012 NFL season, we already have a new all-time leader for passing yards as a rookie: Andrew Luck, with 55 passing yards on what is likely the final Colts drive of the first half against the Chiefs, toppled Cam Newton's record set in 2011.

Newton became the first rookie in NFL history with 4,000 passing yards in a season and finished with 4,051 on the year, breaking Peyton Manning's record. Luck let that last all of one season, immediately busting over Cam with a game to go.

Luck, with six quarters remaining in the season, reached 4,101 yards, the most ever by a rookie. The Colts quarterback already owns the record for most passing yards in a single game, when he broke Newton's record back in November.

What's crazy is that Luck probably isn't going to end up winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award: A quick straw poll, as of today, would probably have him either second or third, behind Robert Griffin III for sure and possibly behind Russell Wilson as well.

That's not a slight, though. What Luck's done in Indianapolis is borderline miraculous. He's played with reasonably limited weapons, no defense and a porous offensive line. Some of those factors resulted in him throwing the ball more than other quarterbacks, and his completion percentage isn't exactly outstanding.

But anyone who watches Luck plays the game can see he's going to be a great, great quarterback for many years. That he'll end up owning the rookie record for passing yards by a wide margin is a decent reflection of that.
