For years, NFL athletes have tried their hand at solving crimes both on the big screen and in action-packed television crime dramas.
Following a 13-year professional career with the New York Giants (1969-71) and the Los Angeles Rams (1972-1981), former defensive end Fred Dryer played a short-tempered LAPD detective in the starring role in Hunter, a series which ran from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s on NBC. Bubba Smith, a former defensive end with the Colts, Raiders and Oilers, appeared in Police Academy 1-6 as soft-spoken police officer Moses Hightower. And at the time of O.J. Simpson’s arrest for double-murder in 1994, the former Bills’ running back was arguably known just as much for his role as Detective Nordberg in the Naked Gun trilogy.
Houston Texans running back Arian Foster is scheduled to appear on an episode of Hawaii Five-0 on Monday, Feb. 18 at 10 p.m. ET on the CBS Television Network. The episode appropriately is titled -- Pa’ani or Hawaiian for “The Game.”
It’s an All-Pro football weekend in Hawaii and while Danny (played by actor Scott Caan) obsesses about the big game, Five-0 investigates the murder of a tech executive with the help of a star football player (Foster). Pat Monahan from the band “Train” and Larry Manetti (“Magnum P.I.”) also guest star in this episode.
Foster, the NFL’s leading rusher in 2010, has earned a spot in the Pro Bowl in each of the last three seasons. In one of Caan’s first roles of his cinematic career, he played West Canaan High School wide receiver Charlie Tweeder in Varsity Blues (1999).
