Ben Roethlisberger: Tom Brady still 'best quarterback in the league'
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger maintains that Tom Brady, despite his struggles, is still the 'best quarterback in the league.'
There's a constant search to try and figure out who the NFL's best quarterback is. You might get a lot of different answers from a lot of different people at any different moment. Right now you wouldn't hear many people say Tom Brady.
"To me, he's the best quarterback in the league and he's done it for a long time," Roethlisberger said. "That's no disrespect to some of these other guys that are doing some amazing things in the NFL right now. But to me, it's about wins and championships -- and he's got more championships than anybody."
The rings comment is indicative of a man who won't listen to reason or rationale. But Roethlisberger went further, noting saliently that Brady's been playing with "receivers that nobody had ever really heard of" and still has the Patriots at 6-2 and atop the AFC East.
"For the first how many weeks of the season he was playing with receivers that nobody had ever really heard of, so you've got to give him credit for getting his team to 6-2," Roethlisberger said. "He's got great vision, he's got big arm strength, a great understanding of offense and defense."
Brady's one of the NFL's all-time greats. He's having an uncharacteristically bad season, and if his second half looks like his first half, it'll probably go down as the worst of his entire career. You can't pin all of his problems on Rob Gronkowski and Danny Amendola being hurt, or having to throw to Kenbrell Thompkins, Aaron Dobson and Julian Edelman all season.
But he's still Tom Brady. If his weapons can get healthy and he can flip the switch -- and we've seen him do just that at times in the past, particularly when people start doubting him -- he's more than capable of returning to form and putting up big numbers.
If (when?) that happens, Roethlisberger's will look like a pretty smart dude.
