Big-name attorney, Ted Wells, to lead NFL's Dolphins investigation
The NFL has decided who will lead the investigation into possible workplace violations in Miami.
Attorney Ted Wells has been appointed by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to lead an independent investigation into the Dolphins workplace conduct as it relates to guard Richie Incognito and tackle Jonathan Martin.
Wells -- who has represented politicians like Eliot Spitzer and Lewis "Scooter" Libby in court while defending corporations like Bank of America, Merck and Citigroup in huge class-action lawsuits -- will prepare a report for the commissioner, who then will make the findings public.
“Ted Wells will independently direct the investigation and submit a report to me,” Goodell said in a statement released late Wednesday afternoon. “Mr. Wells will conduct a thorough and objective investigation. He will ensure that we have all the facts so that we can address this matter constructively. ... Ted Wells will have full authority to investigate as he deems appropriate. He is on the job as of today and will undertake to complete his work as promptly as possible. Consistent with doing a thorough investigation, we have not imposed a specific timetable on him.”
Aside from his big-name clientele, Wells was one named one of the "Decade's Most Influential Lawyers" in 2010 by The National Law Journal. As far as sports league experience, Wells also investigated the recent Syracuse basketball team sexual harassment case and the leadership dispute in the NBA players union.
“I am pleased to accept this appointment by Commissioner Goodell,” Wells said in a statement. “My task is to assemble the facts and present my findings to the commissioner. I will do so fairly and comprehensively so that Commissioner Goodell can address this matter properly. I will begin my work immediately and report my findings to the commissioner as soon as practical.”
